TurnerRotarians describe cotton selection as a blend of art and science stressing 90 percent breeding and 10 percent science. He notes the tedious task of choosing plants, with scientific methods being relatively new in the industry. Continued on Page 6.
Bob Bann, Shafter radio station manager, elected president of the Shafter-Wasco Community Concerts Association for 1953. Along with Bann, Mrs Herb Nickel and Mrs Walter Nicol named first and third vice presidents, Lee Apple treasurer. Board members Bruce Crawford Herb Loewen Ernest Neufeld and Mrs James Trew. Mrs A J Hemingson appointed to board from Shafter. Membership drive to begin March 9 with kickoff supper after next concert. Edgar oy featured at the concert. focus on Shafter ships and venue at School auditorium.
Nine Shafter cafes will link in a coffee drive to raise funds for polio. Tomorrow each cafe will donate coffee proceeds and customers will drop coins into March of Dimes containers instead of cash registers. Participants include V and W Lee's Drive In Betty's Cafe Sportsman's Cafe Shafter Motel Nick's Reed and Bell Clyde's Drive In Larry's Steakhouse and R and W.
District assemblyman from Shaf ter gave $1 to the polio fight triggering a plan to write the names of all contributors of $1 or more in crayon along the sidewalk. Kiwanis members rotated shifts to run the coin line with Mel Parrett canvassing various donors. Continued on Page 5.
E M Richardson, Kern County March of Dimes chair, announced polio figures for 1952 showing 60 cases in Kern County, 36 paralytic and 24 non paralytic, with Shafter suffering one death. He noted respiratory cases raised costs and that Kern County spent 20 773.06 dollars on polio treatments that year.
The Richland School survey staff and faculty will hold a day of uninterrupted study on a holiday Monday for students. Superintendent Bruce Crawford says the board declared the pupil holiday for this purpose and all staff will participate. Dr. Morrisett directs the survey with poets from the University of Los Angeles guiding sessions.
Dog Tag Day in Shafter on February 16 offers rabies shots and 1953 tags for dogs of all sizes. Vaccinations will run at Smith's Corner Service Station from 9 to 11 a.m. and at the Shafter Fire Station from noon to 5 p.m. The cost for vaccination and tag is 2.50 dollars, with rural and city dogs treated at the same rate per agreement between the City Council and county health department.
Richland and Shafter High Schools Teachers Clubs host their annual civic banquet February 16 with Dr. I. James Quillen Stanford acting dean of education delivering "Youth in Our Troubled World." Under Irene Tilley and Jeanette Wheeler, the event is at Richland School Cafeteria starting 7 p.m. with trustees of the Richland School District among guests.
The American Legion wins council support to use the South Shafter Labor Camp for the June carnival after most protest signers lived outside the city. The group plans to use profits, about 500 dollars, for a welfare fund and park improvements at Richland Primary county park.
The Shafter Community Blood Fund now totals 53 pints with 41 pints donated last Friday. Houchin Blood Bank officials gathered 46 percent of the pints from Shafter donors, while five pints came from private citizens. The fund held 12 pints in reserve prior to the drive as a mobile unit plans quarterly visits. A telephone contact list is being compiled to avoid contacting ineligible donors.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce will hold a meeting tomorrow at Lee's Dining Room with Dick Bailey, assistant museum director, addressing landmarks of Kern County. New chamber president Lew Woodard is expected to outline plans to seek members’ ideas on a program of work for 1953 via questionnaires.
Shafter area motorists must pick up their 1953 California auto license tags by Wednesday. Sam Becker and Schmidt Insurance Co. are prepared to supply the tags as a local service to residents.
Shafter festival directors will choose the general chairman and finance chairman on Monday. Edwin Wilson resigns as general chairman to start a Bakersfield law practice. The finance chairman is a new key post to help organize the queen contest and other festival duties.
Shafter High School will close the 1953 football season with a Nov. 20 road game against Wasco, marking the Generals first meeting with Tulare produced champions Bob Mathias noted in the season roundup.
Buttonwillow grower Jack Frey led the honorary mayoral race with 113 votes sponsored by the Buttonwillow Chamber of Commerce to aid the March of Dimes polio drive. Tony Wegis was runner‑up with 85 votes, Ford 53, Darrell Tracy 44, and total fundraising reached 42.70 dollars.
The Shafter council reviewed Ernest McCoy’s tentative sketch for a new City Hall 36 by 20 feet. Council members urged an open plan for most areas, with only the council chamber and key rooms blocked off. The planning commission will study curb and gutter patterns for future construction and assess design ordinances.
Parents pick up semester report cards at Richland School and meet teachers to review each child’s progress. Bruce Crawford says the annual event helps parents understand report card symbols and classroom conditions while strengthening ties with staff.
H. W. Pat Kelly the 89th district assemblyman from Shafter will hold five key committee posts this year in the state legislature. He serves as chairman of the committee on fairs and expositions and as vice chairman of the committee on agriculture with further roles on the council mining and manufacturing and social welfare.
Shafter Potaton Festival pageant naming contest offers a $25 savings bond to the lone entrant if no additional entries arrive by February 16. Festival Secretary Ernie Hofman notes only one entry so far and invites anyone to mail in their suggestion to the Shafter Chamber of Commerce.
Shafter area students in four schools Lerdo Maple Richland and Rio Bravo begin thinking about their Potatoes and Cotton Festival poster contest entries next week. Five months remain for the annual competition chaired by Mrs. Thomas Wedge.
The Kern County Union High School and College District approves a 17 million dollar bond by a large margin. Superintendent Theron McCuen reports 16 181 yes and 2028 no district wide with Shafter showing a 10 to 1 ratio and 383 yes to 34 no. The overall voting ratio across 49 districts was 7.95 to 1.
Bakersfield bowlers won a two team event in Shafter. They posted 2831 points to 2634 by Shafter and registered a 247 polish in the event. The match highlighted Bakersfield’s top performance against Shafter.
