Shafter California hosts the annual queen contest as part of the Nag Shafter Potato Festival. Ernie Hofman announces local groups may sponsor a contestant and ticket sales begin with a 500 prize for the winner, 300 for second, 200 for third. Settler Himio Herrera Dies at Shafter Colony
Himio Herrera a 75 year old daily settler of the Shafter Mexican Colony died last Saturday. He was a native of Mexico. Services were held at Shafter Cemetery with Rev. Patrick Breslin officiating. The rosary was conducted Sunday night in Arm 4 Mortuary. Survivors include two sons Joe and Ignacio five daughters Sofia Ramirez Alcala Fermin Vera Re Mendoza and Soledad Mendoza, all of Shafter.

Plans Set for Safer Highway 99 Lerdo Intersection

Clarence Annin, Wasco area grower, retained his seat by defeating Maynard Crowder 94 to 5 in the first district election. E. J. Peters won 12 votes in the fourth district, Dave Muir tallied 30 votes in the fifth to replace Rolf’s son, and Secretary Allen Johnston earned 162 votes across all five districts to keep his post.
