Suzette Smith reports a cheerleader clinic runs January 26 to February 9 with after school sessions for all 1981-82 Pep Squad hopefuls. Tryouts are February 9. Sophomores may buy class buttons for 75 cents from class officers.
Shafter High School varsity and Frosh Soph wrestlers remained undefeated against Wasco, dominating most weight classes and posting a 37-0 lead before Wasco won a final match. Key Shafter results include Jeff Williams 15-1, Rene Gomez and Rod Defarosa pins, and multiple decisions totaling a wide team margin. The Frosh Soph squad finished 38-24, with several Shafter wins by pins and forfeit.
Shafter High Generals drop to 1-4 in league after a 52-45 loss to Taft. Frosh-Soph Colonels sit 3-2 with Rick Leal scoring 19 in a 39-35 setback to Garces. Girls Varsity, at 2-3, battled Taft and Garces, with Toni Baru lich and Jessica Davis grabbing five rebounds each.
Kern County Parks announces Lake Ming will reopen to public motor boating on Saturday January 31 1981 at 8 00 am. The lake was closed September 8 1980 for launch ramp repairs and cleaning. A weed abatement program will continue when needed and boat racing resumes February 21 22 1981 with dates through May 31.
Final results show 1948 tickets sold raising 1600 dollars per school for ten district teams including Shafter High. Don Harrison, district director of general services, chaired. 17 district admins and staff planned, plus twelve community members. SHS bought wrestling gear and equipment with its share.

Paul Bender of Shafter High was awarded the All American High School honor during halftime after a standout season. He won the state title and finished second nationally with discus throws exceeding 200 feet. He now attends California State University, Fresno, where he continues discus training while the CSUF track team completed a nine day Olympic development tour across several states.
The 1981 Kern County wrestling season starts with a meeting for parents this Thursday at Shafter High School Ro 10 7:00 p.m. Coach Gates says the session invites concerns about the county program and aims to involve parents in improving Shafter’s wrestling.
