Carr trial in Shafter ends as judge takes case under submission
The People of California versus Russell Carr neared a verdict after closing arguments. Judge John L. Fielder said he would carefully review testimony from both sides and render a decision on Carr's guilt or innocence in the June 1, 1980 assault on Calvin T. Johnson. Trial started January 20 with jury selection, and witnesses debated whether Johnson was conscious at the scene, the sequence of events, and if bruises on his arms came from a police grip or an attack.
