Boys aged 8 to 14 may sign up by March 1 for Kern County Wrestling Association events. Practices are Mondays and Wednesdays at Shafter High School gym with matches on Saturdays. Shafter firefighters reported one blaze last week a condemned vacant dwelling on San Diego Street west of Poplar Avenue was set alight by an unknown person. No loss or injuries were recorded as the building owned by Hugh Hamilton of Shafter was vacant at the time.

Shafter Chamber of Commerce directors voted to contribute $200 toward the cost of installing new playground equipment at Manuel Park. The project, sponsored by the Shafter Improvement Council, will replace older apparatus and add new pieces.
