Superior Oil Company completed Mandell No. 2 in Section 27, 28-25, Shafter field, reaching 11,463 feet with oil at 11,252 and gas 2,080,000 cubic feet from a half inch bean. Griffith No. 1 bottomed at 11,490 feet with 364 gravity oil 1,545 barrels and 1,850,000 cubic feet gas. Pasadena Realty cemented Section 33,28-25 at 11,328 feet with sand at 11,502 feet. The Shafter March of Dimes campaign was launched at a luncheon at Crawford's cafe. Funds support infantile paralysis efforts with 50 percent staying in Kern County and 50 percent going to a federal foundation. General Petroleum Corp reports Caldwell No 5 standing cemented at 11 450 feet in the southeast Shafter field. A redrill is needed after a drill pipe was lost and a fishing job failed. Disincorporation Petition Expected To Be Presented

Army air field to be built near Shafter projects landmark expansion
Work to start within 10 days on a new United States Army Air Corps basic flying field and school three miles east of Shafter on Lerda road. Lt. Col. Cassidy says 2,100 enlisted and 262 officers will be stationed there with barracks, shops, hospital, gym, and mess halls. Construction, about $1,000,000, will be private contract and completed by May with the field operating by June. The site covers parts of Sections 8 and 9 and will include power, roads, a rail spur, and grading, promising a substantial business boost to Shafter and Kern County.

Construction of a new firehouse for Shafter will begin in three to four weeks after final WPA papers are approved. The building will include space for two stalls and a small locker room, with initial county funding of about 3000 dollars. A city fire truck is planned, expected to lower local fire insurance rates.
