Irrigation District Election From Shafter To Wasco

Residents of Shafter and Wasco vote next Wednesday to elect three board members of the Shafter Wasco Irrigation District and to choose an assessor secretary treasurer. Incumbents defend divisions with various opponents while the large central vote covers the entire district.

Kiwanis Club Lunch Shows Hawaiian Motion Pictures

Shafter Kiwanis Club members watched colored motion pictures taken in the Hawaiian islands during yesterday's noon luncheon at Crawford's cafe. Visiting Kiwanian Paul Reiss of Bakersfield attended with Baker club members as guests. The program was introduced by Bill Rodgers.

Highway Upgrade Planned for 99 North of Bakersfield

The 1941 43 biennium plan calls for widening Highway 99 from the overpass north of Bakersfield to seven and a half miles further, with Lerdo gorgeage area north of Lerdo included. A four lane highway is planned and funded by the California Department of Public Works Division of Highways.

Wilshire Oil Completes Campen No 1 Well

Wilshire Oil reports Campen No 1 Well in Section 1 29 25 on the eastern edge of the area produced about 3 500 barrels. The well bottomed at 11 500 feet with sand topped at 11 370 feet. Completion signals potential interfield connection between Shafter and Greeley fields.

Union Completes Pacific States Well On West Edge

Union Oil reports completion of its Pacific States Section 33 28-25 well on the western edge of the field. The well flowed at 1 200 barrels daily if traps hold, with sand hit at 11 406 feet and depth 11 506 feet. Additional locations nearby may trigger more drilling activity. Union’s 634 project reached 10 150 feet in 17 days. Crites No 2 in Section 28 is slated as the next pilot project.

Vaccination Drive Sets Dog Immunization in Shafter

City residents and rural neighbors will bring dogs to Shafter City Hall on Santa Fe Way tomorrow from 8 am to 5 pm for rabies vaccination and licensing. Fees total 4.50 for city dogs and 2.50 to 2.00 for county dogs, with Dr. N M Twisselmann in charge. Public Health records show rabies cases declining after 1938 39 vaccination program.

Farewell for Berthold Mission Trip to India

A Shafter group traveled to Wilmington to bid farewell to Rev and Mrs Daniel Berthold as they sail for India to join missionary work. The voyage will be their sixth overseas assignment. The local party included several Berg and Gloeckler family members and P H Kroeker and P C Epp couples. Meetings preceded the departure at the Mennonite Brethren church with farewell events also held in Reedley and Los Angeles.

Depot Mail Box Possible at Santa Fe Depot

Postmaster L Berry reports interest from postal officials and Congressman Alfred J Elliott on placing an official government mail box at the Santa Fe depot. The current box may move from the local office to the depot, though no firm decision has been announced. Elliott says he has raised the issue with the Washington Post Office Department and that all considerations are being given to the request. The night mail box issue arose after an unofficial box at the depot was removed during the holidays.

Plane Crash Kills Cadet Robert E. Baylis at Kern Airport

A BT-13 Vultee training plane crashed three miles south of Shafter early yesterday, killing Flying Cadet Robert E. Baylis, 25, stationed at Kern County airport with the Seventy Ninth School squadron. The crash tore through a plowed field, leaving Baylis strapped to his seat. a board of inquiry is named.
