Western Union Opens Downtown at Shafter Hardware
Western Union moved its service to Shafter Hardware downtown replacing the Santa Fe Depot location. Randolph cited longer hours, with telegraph service from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Emergency messages still go to Bakersfield night offices. The move began December 30 as Randolph and his mother Mrs. T. R. Kirby learned the teletype operation.
