Clayton Hutchings 26 of Shafter joined Dee's Barber in Wasco on January 6. He and his wife Anne Dunham of Shafter own a home at 350 Atlantic and have a 3 1/2 year old daughter. Hutchings attended Shafter schools and played football.
DeLuxe Barbers maintained the league lead in the Shafter Adult Basketball League after Christmas, edging Hitchcock's Auto Parts 30 to 28 in a comeback thriller. Standout players included J. C. Phillips, Jerry Lauderdale, and Bud Anderson as Nick's Drive Inn posted a 32 50 loss to Hitchcock-Neuman.
A large audience is expected at the Thursday banquet starting at 7 p.m. with dignitaries from Kern County and adjacent chambers of commerce. Attendees include Harlan Hagen Walter Stern Dorothy Donahe John Williamson Vera Gibson Roy Woollames Vanece Webb LeRoy Galven and local officials Mayor Grundy councilmen Beel Gates Lane Larsen Chief Witcher. Robert Miller will speak on business topics and the event will announce the 1958 Man of the Year with ticket sales rising.
Preliminary plans formed about three months ago for the Torrey Johnson campaign and finalized this morning by Rev. Henry Dick of Mennonite Brethren Church Rev. Mel Krug of First Baptist Church and Rev. David Block of South Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. Offices created include Chairman Vice Chairman director of personal work Secretary Treasurer Head Usher with specified names. The campaign runs Sunday February 8 to Sunday February 15 at the Mennonite Brethren Church 400 Kern Street.
The Northern Golf Association sponsors a 18 hole team tournament at the new course this Sunday with twenty teams of four. Play begins at 9:47 am and later. prizes awarded for best scores. Notable participants include Fern Wand Roberts and Sally Payton among others.
A $1000 budget for the Merchants' committee was approved by the board of directors of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture at a recent meeting. Names of attendees include Margo Sundberg and Burtner among others, with times noted for various handoffs.
El Charaf held a December 29 charter ceremony in Shafter to form a second Kern County Shrine Club. T. P. Tom Rootes serves as vice president with J. D. Wasco named secretary treasurer. Founding officers from Wasco and Shafter include D. M. Steele Sr. and O. B. Los Angeles host the January 21 dinner at the Delano Cuckoo Inn for the first charter meeting.
