Two adult men died in a Monday crash at Beech Avenue and Riverside Drive in Shafter. Police say a GMC Envoy may have run a red light and struck a Dodge pickup, pushing it into an orchard. the Envoy driver survived with injuries. The investigation continues as witnesses note high speed.
Elizabeth Ruelas runs a weekly confidential support group at the Wasco Sheriff’s Substation for women who are victims of domestic violence. The 16 week program aims to help participants find themselves, understand their situations, and safely share experiences.
The January meeting saw the council approve a building regulation code update requiring indoor sprinklers in new one and two family homes and townhomes. They also selected bids for MiSwaco electrical service from Kern Pacific, Sierra, or Becka, approved a $26,000 gas service agreement from the Gas Company funded from off site improvements, and OK’d up to $60,000 for coating 12 manholes near ITTC and MiSwaco. An emergency $16,000 repair for Well No 8 was authorized from water enterprise funds, and a $40,000 budget amendment reclassified Extra Help Engineering Technician Marcos Torres to meet city needs.
The national program based in Mobile announces a name change to Distinguished Young Women to empower young women. Shafter’s Junior Miss adopts the new title for the high school class of 2012 with the 2011 March 1 event guiding the transition. The revamped program preserves scoring criteria and values while highlighting life skills and opportunities in education.
The biennial Homeless Census will start at 6 a.m. January 27 with United Way volunteers and county teams counting in Wasco and Shafter. Shelters will log counts the night before, while teams of six search for those meeting HUD homeless criteria.
