Shafter Council honors officers and community recipients
The Shafter City Council honored 2011 officers and civilians of the year including Phil Yoshikawa, Lynn Yoshikawa, Sarita Love, and Kel Lopeteguy, with community figures Wayne Kethherside Fred Thomas Damaso Quintanilla and Stan and Nancy Wilson also recognized. A public hearing approved 09-10/10-11 CDBG funds for a Walker Street storm drain project at 400000 and several contracts involving emergency plans, a pistol range lease, ERate fiber work, and a 14 mile broadband expansion costing about 1.5 million with ARRA support. a loan arrangement related to Redevelopment Agency funds was noted.

Richland Schools Adopt Multimedia Learning System
Richland School District and Librarian Connie Koop won a $404,287 federal grant to upgrade libraries. Funds support 1000 Books program, 30 laptops per campus with Kidspiration and World Book access, safe search for grade levels, and teacher-guided lessons. Family Literacy Nights will occur twice per campus, with a district library website launching soon.

Shafter hosts boxing exhibition and community events

Five arrested in Shafter drug sweep by Cal MMET
California Multi-jurisdictional Methamphetamine Enforcement Team consisting of Shafter Police and Kern County agencies arrested five individuals in Shafter last Friday. Victor Ramirez, 42, was booked for possession and transportation of controlled substances after authorities found methamphetamine. Denise Leann Pool, 47, was arrested on multiple counts including destroying evidence and possession of methamphetamine for sale. A search warrant served on Rodriguez Street led to four additional arrests on various charges as officers recovered scales and drug paraphernalia.
