Mrs Claude Mitchell won the Plymouth prize with 10 725 610 points in the Shafter Press Everybody Wins contest. Bobby Reeves, a Shafter High School student, received $750 cash for second place. Other top finishers were Mrs Joyce Pitts third, Mrs Connie Mills fourth, Billy Hinsley fifth, and Larry Fenderson sixth.

City Rebuffs Stockton Agent in Telephone Rate Hearing
The City of Shafter rejected a Stockton accountant Bruce McKnight who offered to represent the city at a California Public Utilities Commission hearing on proposed telephone rate increases. PT&T manager Truman Blair of Delano argued McKnight’s fee of 25 dollars was unwarranted and that the company would gain about 4 million dollars, not 44 million, if the rates were approved.
