Burglars Break into Potato Sheds Over New Year
Police Chief John Reily reports burglars broke into three potato sheds during the New Year holiday. The Brown and Bryant Sill and F W Handel sheds were entered. only small items such as one case of oil and a metal letter opener were taken. Desks were rifled and papers scattered across the offices.

Postal Receipts Hit New High as Shafter Post Office Expands
Postmaster George Guenther reported Shafter's 1953 postal receipts climbed to 527217 dollars and 38 cents, a record year driven by first class service and a new building. Final quarter December alone posted 15785 38 dollars, with other periods totaling 12882 23 in March 12165 84 in June and 11383 93 in September. Money orders reached 609920 43 for the year, including 142001 85 in March 171902 02 in June 127928 10 in September and 169088 32 in December. The peak season saw 12000 average daily outgoing mail from Dec 16 to 26 and 61 parcel bags for Santa Claus. New post office equipment arrives over the next 90 days and will be installed later.

Pageant-Win Bond Offered For Shafter Festival Name
Shafter residents of all ages are invited to submit names for the first annual Pototo and Cotton Festival pageant to begin in May.
