A licensed rest home will begin operations in Shafter after the Lewis couple purchased the Poso Street property. Mrs. Lewis, a practical nurse, has worked in a Bakersfield rest home for two years and aims to create a homelike atmosphere for convalescent guests. The project reflects a recognized need for local elder care.
John C. Reily, former Shafter Police Chief for nearly two decades, was appointed constable by Judge Blake Witcher at noon Monday. Reily, who also served as a night sergeant, previously held a 1930s constable post before Shafter’s incorporation. The appointment was effective immediately.
Art Craig assistant chief outlined the evolution of firefighting from ancient brigades using blankets and sponges to modern systems. He described early steam pumper attempts, horse drawn wagons, and the rise of city and county departments, with modern alarm networks and formal fire prevention training now offered by several colleges.
Future Farmers chapters from Fresno Madera Tulare Kern and Kings counties are invited to Fresno State College Cotton judging contest conducted with Producers Cotton Oil Company. Four parts include written test and judging sections with trophies for top teams and prizes for leading individuals.
Mr and Mrs Thompsons announce the birth of a 6 lb 12 oz daughter at 3 20 am on January 6 at Mercy Hospital Bakersfield The grandparents are Mr and Mrs Fred Thompson of Shafter and Mr and Mrs Herman Mitchell of Bakersfield.

At a joint meeting of the 1958 and 1959 Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agricultural boards, an income and expenditures audit by Don Ruggenberg was presented by outgoing secretary Sam Becker and accepted. A tentative 1959 budget was reported amid plans for the upcoming installation banquet. The next formal installation meeting is set for Monday morning at the Shafter Hotel dining room. Judge Witcher, a 23 year Shafter resident and former constable, announces his family and home address at 25 East Orange Street and notes recent grandchild birth.
Bakersfield Trade Club prepares for 1700 guests as Danny Thomas of KGEE headlines the annual Ladies Night and Chamber of Commerce banquet. The event is set for January 16 at the Kern County Fairgrounds.
Shafter post office receipts rose to a new record of 69370.98 dollars in 1958, up from 59241.31 dollars in 1957, a roughly 17 percent gain. Postmaster Gene Guenther notes July 1 rate increases account for about 8 percent, with city growth contributing a further 9 percent. Holiday mailings were weaker than normal.

A girl named Jerri Ann Snider was born to Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Snider at Mercy Hospital in Shafter at 10:23 a.m. December 31, weighing 8 pounds 4 ounces. This is the couple’s first child, with grandparents Troy Snider of Branson Missouri and J. H. Helm of Bakersfield, and great grandparents Fannie Ellison of Modesto and Art Combs of Branson Missouri.
Richland School Board will chair a panel January 13 with Bruce Crawford as moderator. Board members listed include Mrs. Lee Thomas Leonard Gaede Harold Miller Harold Greene and Clarence Neuman. Mrs Ed Nikkel PTA president will preside at 7 30 p m in the brand school cafeteria with sixth grade chorus entertainment and nursery care.
Dorsett Phillips told Bakersfield Rotarians at the December 30 luncheon how a debt owed nine years earlier started his journey into oil painting. He shared how one lesson led him to teach himself and pursue a creative, relaxing pastime with scenic works and portraits.
The Christian Business Men's Committee will hold a luncheon meeting at noon at the Veterans Memorial Hall. Mrs. Peterker of Wasco cooks the meal for $1.25 per plate. Bill Siemens chairs the program with various members participating. The group meets regularly every Thursday in the Memorial Hall.
