Sisters Injured in Hit and Run Near Border

Four men fled a speeding vehicle after colliding with Leah Meeler’s car at the E Tulare Ave and Willow St intersection in Shafter on Monday January 3 at 7 45 am. Leah suffered a broken collarbone and pin insertion, Tiffany 10 had facial cuts and back injuries, Tara 12 was treated and released, while the suspects were arrested or questioned.

Legion Oratorical Contest Opens in Shafter January 16

The American Legion 46th National High School Oratorical Contest begins locally on Sunday January 16 at 1 00 p m in Shafter Veterans Hall. Local chairman Grady Bartlett notes strong community and school support with former winners advancing to district and area levels. Contestants must craft an oration on the U S Constitution and may give an extemporaneous speech after topic draw with five minute prep.

Police seek funds for campus police program at two schools

Shafter Police Department seeks about 30000 dollars from the California Youth Authority to place a sworn on campus officer at Shafter High and Richland Junior High. The goal is to improve student attitudes toward police, boost communication, assist with safety and curriculum, and divert high risk youth through counseling and security roles.

Richland trustees start three to four year policy review

Richland School District Board of Trustees began a lengthy overhaul of all policies on January 3 1983 with a six year gap since last review. Principals from Richland's primary intermediate and junior high schools joined the board meeting to discuss philosophy retention acceleration and graduation standards. Dr Vera Stone urged public input as the process proceeds and noted the district aims to ensure students meet proficiency before advancing.

Shafter Chamber to Install Officers at Awards Banquet

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture hosts its annual installation and Community Awards Banquet Saturday at 7 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Hall. Don Zachary becomes president with Betty Gloeckler as vice president and Ben Grundy as treasurer. Past president Jack Frost will install the officers.
