SHS Recreation Plan Prompts Voter Debate at SHS Auditorium

At Shafter High School, residents debated a proposal by the school and the Recreation and Parks District to convert land currently used by the Ag Department into two softball fields, two soccer fields, two practice fields, and a parking lot. Principal Evan Jones cited enrollment growth and land needs, while local officials described potential gains for the Ag Department, the high school, and the district.

Judge Ingle Sworn In Shafter Wasco District Courts

Gary Ingle was sworn in for a six year term as judge for the Shafter and Wasco District Courts by Kern County Supervisor Gene Tackett at the Wasco Justice Building on December 28, 1982. He will serve January 1983 to January 1989 after running unopposed in the last election and was chosen in 1981 from eight candidates. Ingle values community service, emphasizes fair, consistent rulings, and notes collaboration with probation, Public Defender, and District Attorney in pretrial conferences. He discusses his small town roots, family, education, and his view of a judge as a patient, honest community parent.

1982 year of quiet progress in Shafter

Shafter enjoyed a relatively quiet productive year in 1982. City administrator August Caires announced six liability suits were closed or settled. The city and Recreation and Parks District explored an athletic facility for Shafter High School Ag Farm. Police and fire departments restructured and crime prevention started. Loyd Link became mayor in April with new council members Cathy Prout and John Thomas.

Shafter Conservation Council formed as ad hoc public effort

The Shafter City Council named Don Little and Loyd Link to serve on an ad hoc Conservation Council under City Administrator August Caires. The citizen group aims to study energy programs from PG&E and Southern California Gas and report to the community, hoping to help 2,500 utility users save on bills.
