The Ladies Aid Society of the Union Church will meet Thursday at two o clock at the Congregational Church. Rabbi Rosen of Bakersfield will give an address and officers will be installed, including Mrs Ba Brown as President Mrs George Guen ther as Vice President Mrs W M Lowe as Secretary and Mrs Ar Kadel as treasurer. Hostesses are Mesdames Arthur Brownell and J L Hill with Mrs J A Roscamp in charge. The public is invited.
Charles Vinson McKenney of 186 Beth Eden Street died suddenly at home. He was 71. Services are pending at Shafter Funeral Home. He leaves wife Emma, seven children, 14 grandchildren, four great grandchildren. Born December 19, 1877. Arrangements handled by Shafter Funeral.
Shafter High's basketball team lost to Tehachapi on Friday night and again to Taft the next evening. The Colonels aimed to win both games but fell short. Resumption of the season runs today with Shafter hosting Lindsay in two 4 p.m. games.
Shaffer High School extends remedial instruction to social science reading and mathematics. Classes target specific weaknesses with small enrollments and individualized attention. Teachers include Dick Heber for social science and Joe Bruner for reading and math, with testing director Jim Wilson providing aid.

A new U S Government Shafter Acala 442 cotton strain, developed from a single plant in 1939 at Expe Farm, promises longer tougher fibers and 20 to 25 percent greater strength. In its first commercial year limited seed and 45 000 acres in Kern County helped push California's total cotton area to 216 000 acres and a 250 000 bale harvest as the state eyes broader use next season.
Shafter High School officials announced that the student body will elect new officers for the second semester on Wednesday January 19. Campaign activity is already underway with nominees including Burnquist Peggy Kel Betty Stringer Dond Baughman and Mary Channeson. Nomination slate lists Tom Fletcher as president Lowell Bergman as vice president Dana Baughman as secretary and Marjorie Peterson as social chairman.

Joseph Hardy Westbrook of Shafter died Friday at age 55. A farmer, he lived at 309 Marengo with his family for 22 years. Survived by wife Esther and sons Walter, Joseph Jr., and Harold Eddie, all of Shafter. Services Friday at Flickinger-Janzen Mortuary conducted by Elder Richard Monroe. Burial in Shafter Cemetery. Born September 21 1893 in Detroit Texas. He leaves brothers Sam and Wylie, and four sisters in Oklahoma and Wasco. Bearers listed as Robert Mixon, yn Alexander, B O Bird, Mann, Connell, and others.
