Man Arrested in 1978 Kern County Murder Case
Thomas Lopez Lopez, 27, booked into Kern County Jail on December 28 for the murder of Enrique Flor Cuadroz. Victim found January 31, 1978 near Shafter, stabbed and partially buried. Homicide warrants issued February 23, 1978. Lopez arrested in Yuma County, Arizona on December 23 and extradited. Other suspect still sought. witness Stanley Issac found the body near Lerdo Highway.

Traffic accidents plague Shafter area in early 1979
A Shafter man, David Saltzman, 28, was killed January 6 after being struck on Beech Road by a car driven by George William Painter. Police report the fatality occurred near Riverside. The prior end of 1978 saw three injury accidents in Shafter, including a collision at Wall and Rodriguez, a highway rollover on Central Valley Highway, and a motorcycle crash at Central Valley Highway and Central Avenue involving Ronald Punt and Rose Baughm.

The Shafter City Council met to approve attendance for City Administrator Bill Sheldon at a three day Monterey conference with estimated cost 252 dollars plus car use. They also approved 300 dollars for City Hall painting, 210 dollars for paint 50 dollars for supplies and materials with labor by city employees, and 404.92 dollars for an airless paint sprayer funded from savings in the City Hall roofing project. The meeting covered multiple contracts with the Chamber of Commerce including 271.19 spent on Kern County Fair Booth 105.43 on Wasco Rose Festival float and 58.30 on advertising 25 000 dollars to build restrooms in Hudson Parkette with about 800 dollars in revenue sharing funds for hookups. The Ash Street project was referred for committee recommendations and a 1976 Park Bond Act lighting project for Shafter High School was approved.
