E J Peters Maple District grower and National Potato Council president forecasts a steadier year for potatoes. Voters in the Shafter Irrigation District face two key measures early next year to secure Central Valley water via the Friant Kern Canal. Directors seek approval of a water service contract with the Bureau of Reclamation and permission to float a bond to fund a distribution system. 1800 acres south of Shafter along Central Valley Highway are being leveled for farming. P G Andrew, Stockton contractor, says two million cubic yards of earth are moved by nine platoons using 34 carryalls, nine pushers, 11 reservoirs. Project should take 90 days with a 320 acre weekly target.
