Rotary Club Is Organized In Shafter

A 35 member group met at Café Neuman to form a Shafter Rotary club linking the town with more than 4400 clubs worldwide. Officers were elected and charter delivery will follow once international approval is granted. The group emphasizes four avenues of service: to the club, to one’s vocation, to the community, and to the world.

Supervisors Rename Woollomes Board Chairman

Roy Woollomes of Delano was unanimously reelected chairman of the Kern County Board of Supervisors at the first meeting of the year in Bakersfield. Woollomes, serving his sixth year, faced a motion that failed with Wimmer and Yin in favor while Harty Abel and Woollomes opposed.

Members of the Shefte club will meet by eight o clock tonight in the city. Dick Arnold announced the plan. The discussion will focus on the operation of a pistol range near Shafter.

General Petroleum Eyes Wagner No 3 in Shafter Field

General Petroleum officials expect to bring in Wagner No 3 at 11 (depth 11 515 feet) in the Shafter field today with casing and cementing at 11 360 feet. Five producing wells will be in operation, four on Wagner land and one on Van Ness. Caldwell No 1 is set to move in. Production is cut to 300 barrels to balance state demand amid ample storage and unsettled prices.

Shafter District Directory Planned by Publicist Penner

In response to demand from local business leaders and shippers, John C. Penner announces a Shafter area directory listing name address and occupation of every resident aged 16 and over. The directory, about 60 pages, will be canvassed house to house and funded by advertisements and sale of copies, with first issue planned for February.

Growers intend to plant over 100 acres in the Lerdo region and may set small plots near Shafter. Full planting not expected to begin until late next week with a peak around an unspecified date.

City Council Hears Currie Engineering Proposal And Salary Increases

The adjourned council meeting discussed Currie Engineering taking over the Shafter sidewalk curb project and a percentage payment if WPA funds are used. The city also planned a $50 month salary raise for Judge F. E. and for City Clerk Frank Shaw as tax collector. Additional items included road property along Lerdo road, moving infringement lines to allow sidewalks, and confectionery push cart status.

Rabies Quarantine Expanded After Dog Killings

County health officials extended a rabies quarantine after three dogs were killed following suspected disease. One person receives Pasteur treatment after a bite as Dr. Smith warns up to 200 county animals may be infected. Police earlier disposed of a symptomatic dog on town’s southern edge.

Bales Of Cotton Remain In District In Shafter Area

About 600 bales of cotton remain in the Shafter district with picking nearing completion as weather remains the key factor. Through the week, 587 bales were ginned bringing district totals to 14 325 bales across Shafter gins Camp West Lowe D O Moore and Shafter Wasco. Estimates for remaining bale counts vary by gin from 100 to 250 bales, depending on weather and field conditions.

Union Oil reports the 734 well in the Shafter field completed casing in 58 days, a potential field speed record. Superior finished its Ruhl No 2 in 59 days, with workers reaching 11 012 feet in 38 days, as drilling continues.
