About 70 Shafter and Wasco potato growers met at Shafter High School to oppose federal marketing quotas and marketing agreements for potatoes. They proposed quotas based on acreage if quotas are adopted, and named a committee to press for county allotments based on yields for 1936-1938. They discussed California and county allotments under AAA and urged delaying any action until 1940.

Potatoes acreage allotment set for county in 1939
County growers will receive five cents per sack on a normal yield of 372 bushels or about 223 sacks under the 16 775 acre allotment. 1 406 children attended a Shafter theatre party hosted by local civic groups to meet Santa Claus. Union Extends Deep Drilling Record At Shafter Field
Union Oil continues pursuit of a deep drilling record at its 734 well in the Shafter field. Drilling reached 1200 feet Tuesday with 200 feet to go before oil sand. casing expected before week’s end and production within about 10 days after sand is hit. If the pace holds, the 40 days so far could drop under 60, earning world recognition for depth in the Shafter field.

Maple school held a Christmas program Thursday evening in the new Maple auditorium. Alfred Sessions led the Maple band, John Isbell led first grade singing, Elizabeth Devine directed the second grade drill, Letha Larson oversaw a fourth grade playlet and pageant. North Shafter road widening under way preliminary to Shafter-Wasco highway expansion
A state highway project in North Shafter moves buildings back from the edge of the planned widening of the Shafter-Wasco highway. The state will add 20 feet along the road and construct a third lane once property arrangements are finalized.
