Mr and Mrs Mike Pegues of San Leandro joined the Dick Arnold and Murray Arnold families in Shafter for Christmas with dinners hosted by Mr and Mrs P L Arnold and family.
Mr and Mrs Robert R Holmes spent the New Year holiday in Pasadena to attend the Tournament of Roses parade and expect to return home Friday evening.
Bank of America Shafter branch manager Joe Cosgrove told the Rotary Club at Cawelo Motel that the bank’s annual turnover is 100 million dollars. He explained banking as a system of credit and outlined two bank functions: gathering community funds and transferring them globally.
Kern County Chamber of Commerce plans a Skyway 99 air marking program from San Diego to Seattle to guide transient pilots. Aviation chief Cecil Meadows notes 12 000 planes used Kern County Airport this year while 24 oil companies back the plan and Arvin’s 140 C district readies a $48 000 improvement along 27 miles of state route.
Burial services were held Tuesday for Tommie Jeral Draper a 9 month old Shafter infant who died Monday in a Bakersfield hospital. He was the son of Mr and Mrs T J Draper born March 29 in Bakersfield. Services were at Flickinger Janzen Mortuary at 3 30 p m and burial followed in Shafter Cemetery.
Friday evening visitors to Mr. and Mrs. John Fox were Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Schneider and their son from Los Angeles, sharing the occasion with the Foxes.
Evangelist Joseph W. Johnston of the Fuller Evangelistic Foundation will lead eight days of meetings starting this Sunday at the First Baptist Church, 189 E. Lerdo Highway. Johnston, a trained Bible teacher, promotes Bible studies and has published pamphlets. Services begin at 7 30 P.M. and run through January 11 with an evening close. Everyone is welcome to attend at least one service.
California DMV and CHP offices begin selling 1948 license tabs with red and silver designs. Bakersfield reports early lines as owners renew, pay fees, and receive receipts valid for title transfer. 1948 white registration cards to follow from Sacramento. Deadline for Bakersfield payment without penalty is February 4, with mail applications due by midnight that day.
Shafter issued 365 435 dollars in building permits in 1947, averaging over a thousand dollars daily. October led with 59 700 dollars in permits, November 55 340 dollars, and new homes accounted for 29 percent of yearly permits. Ten small garages 10 stores and shops were built, repairs led with 39 permits, electric and plumbing permits totaled 80, and a Richland swimming pool and room installation permit for 163 170 dollars was expected.
About 70 clerical staff from Kern County Union High School District gathered for a one day institute in Bakersfield. Attendees from Bakersfield College and area high schools attended morning sessions, a luncheon, and five afternoon groups covering mimeographing dittoing calculating machine operation photo stating and switchboard work. District leaders including Dr John W Hardt Florence McCullen and Dorothy Donahoe organized the event to foster efficiency and reduce postwar turnover.
Wasco Music Association launches a week long drive January 5 to 10 to organize a Community Concert Association. In Shafter Mrs. Rolf Jacobsen leads the effort with a dinner conference and volunteer committees inviting local support to secure memberships enabling at least three major classical concerts. Membership grants access to all programs nationwide, with funds spent on artists and local presentation costs.
Two fires and three resuscitator calls kept local firemen busy last week. The city fire department, with county help, responded to a baby choking case at 550 Acacia and a 9 month old boy later at Cabin 9 in Anderson Trailer Court. A Christmas Day blaze at 18650 Poplar Avenue caused roof damage before county crews extinguished it.
California jumps from 14th to 5th in cotton production led by new Acala strain 442. 1947 yield projected at 685000 bales on 536000 acres valued around 135 million dollars. By 1949 the Acala strain aims for wider planting and earlier maturity across a regional belt.
Dinner guests at the John Fox home Saturday evening were Mr. and Mrs. George Fox of Shafter and Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Thomas of Long Beach.
Carl Adamson of Kenmore North Dakota visits the father of Mrs. Robt Holmes of Shafter. He expects to stay here through most of the winter months.
