The Union Congregational Church postpones its annual meeting to Wednesday January 14 1948 at 7 30 pm in the church. The meeting was previously set for tomorrow night but is moved to next week due to a scheduling change.
The Shafter farm labor camps operated by a local growers nonprofit have received a renewed six month revocable lease extending operation through June 30, 1948, with plans for another renewal. The camps house thousands of agricultural workers and are located on Santa Fe Way and Shafter Avenue, with residency limited to farmworkers.
The Kiwanis club closed its year with a general music and singing program last Wednesday. President Art Hemingson presided for the final time. Guests included Noel Roberts and Rev Hollister B Miller from Bakersfield, Elmer Anderson of Shafter, Leslie Gunnarson of Kingsburg, Prof. William Johnson of Tabor College, and others from Bakersfield, Hillsboro and South Carolina.
Harleigh B Trecker associate professor of social work at the University of Southern California will discuss Recreation and the Community at Bakersfield mid January. He will speak January 29 during the Kern County Recreation Institute sessions running January 19 20 22 26 27 29 and 30. Trecker a George Williams College and University of Chicago alum earned an MA in 1938. He directed Chicago Leisure Time service 1934 37 supervising 1000 workers in 100+ agencies before joining USC in 1941.
Mr. and Mrs. Archie Luck of Stockton were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Battagliaes over New Years.

A county fire crew and Vernon Pierce responded to a tree fire at 30564 Los Angeles Ave one mile south of town started by rubbish disposal. The tree damaged nearby telephone wires but suffered slight damage. The same crew aided at a doctor’s office where Mrs. Kate McCoy 73 received resuscitation but died at the hospital.
The Teen Age dance will be held Friday at the Woman's Club house at Sungets and James streets. Paul Garrett and his band will provide music for dancing from 8 p.m. to shortly before midnight. Door prizes will be awarded as the Teen Age dance officials note. Chaperones from the Legion and Auxiliary will oversee the event, held monthly for local younger residents.
The Seventh-Day Adventist Sabbath School children led by Mrs. Elizabeth Voth presented a program on December 27 marking their thirteenth missionary day. The local church raised $571.62 to aid Burma relief, fund rebuilding hospitals and clinics, and equip a hospital boat for use in Burma, with costumes and songs from various lands highlighting the event.
Marion Crockett and George Enns have purchased Ken's Drug Store in the La Cresta Addition Bakersfield. Crockett long connected with Shafter Drug Store and Enns wife employed by E. B. Stringham of Shafter Drug Store. Their Shafter affiliation ended at year’s start as they launch in Bakersfield.
William H. Lowden, a 20 year veteran of the financial business and UC Berkeley graduate, is named Resident Manager of the Bakersfield Division for Walston, Hoffman & Goodwin. He formerly served as a sales representative and analyst for West Coast investment houses and retired as a Major from the Air Force before joining the firm.
The 1947 actions marked a key date for World War II veterans eligibility on July 25 1947 setting deadlines for education training GI loans and readjustment allowances. Congress approved higher subsistence for disabled trainees auto purchase extensions for amputees and map leave pay deadlines. VA Branch 12 saw enrollments exceed 200 900 in education or on the job training across California Arizona Nevada and Hawaii.

Services for Mrs. Katheryn Lillian McCoy of Shafter aged 71 who died Saturday in a Bakersfield hospital will be held at 2:30 p.m. in Flickinger Janzen Mortuary with Rev. E. L. Bradhurst officiating. Burial is in Shafter Cemetery. Surviving: husband George W. McCoy two daughters D D Flaming and Oscar Beach of Escalon one son Harry K. McCoy 17 grandchildren four great grandchildren two sisters Bell Dunlap and Eva Bullock. Born November 24 1876 Sedalia Missouri a native, she lived in Shafter nine years.
The Salvation Army Service Committee of Shafter and Buttonwillow will hold a welfare meeting Thursday night January 8 at 7 30 in the S A Camp Co office Shafter. S A Camp is chairman and urges all interested parties to attend to discuss welfare needs.
The Business and Profession Women’s Club will hold its monthly meeting at 7 30 Thursday evening. The 1947 48 Year Books will be distributed at the meeting. Mrs. Annette Albright, president, announced the event.

In 1947 harness racing, horses owned by L A Camp and Wm Lachenmaier earned 54 1 on top tracks including Hollywood Park Roosevelt Raceway Long Island Goshen N Y Bay Meadows Portland and Aurora Downs They notched 25 firsts 18 seconds 18 thirds 11 fourths and 16 fifths Red Streak led with 31 225 and set a national record Winnings for joint Camp Lachenmaier horses were 31 225 for Red Streak and 4 299 for Angus Worthy plus others including Frontiersman Justus Dillon Madara and Max Napoleon Training continues at Shafter stables for the 1948 Santa Anita season.
The Business and Professional Women's Club of Shafter reports active community service. More than 40 Blue Bird girls were sponsored this year, funds were raised by a food sale and rummage sale, and support aided Florence Smith and her Blue Birds. Officers include Annette Albright, Helen Holmes, Jeanette Wheeler, Verna Furlong, Juanita Battaglia, and Lorraine Kleinkauff. Meetings occur twice monthly at Legion hall and local venues.
County health department schedules rabies vaccination and tagging for dogs at Shafter and nearby locations. Clinics run February 3 and 4 with times at Pete's Camp Myrick's Corner Service Station Smith's Corner and County Fire Station. Fees are 150 for male and spayed dogs 2.00 for females with tagging mandatory in unincorporated areas.
Noted California writer and Los Angeles Times columnist Lee Shippey will speak at Shafter Town Hall Forum on Tuesday January 13 at 8 p.m. in Richland School Cafeteria and before the Shafter Rotary Club at noon. He discusses California people in his Times column and books including his forthcoming Incredible California. He is the third speaker this year, following Dr. Howard McMurray and Kent Roberts.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce met to name board members for 1948 and plan activities. A new Christmas Decoration committee was appointed with Herb Schirmer Irvin E Fike and Herb Neuman. Phil Horwath was elected Secretary, succeeding Al Mortimore with thanks for his 1947 Chamber work.
Kern County public schools receive 4 604 166 dollars in state aid for 1947 48, up from 2 670 367 the previous year. Elementary districts get 3 564 827 and secondary 1 039 339, with 29 130 and 10 271 daily attendees, totaling 39 401. State aid per pupil is 120 dollars county wide, compared with 80 and 90 per pupil for 1946 47.
Holiday guests of Mrs Ruth Duke included her daughter and family Mr and Mrs Willie Watts of Strafford Oklahoma and Mrs Duke's brother B H Griffin and wife of Bremer Missouri. Mr Griffin is in the feed business in Bremer.
Out of town guests visited during the Christmas season at the G L Starrh home include Mr and Mrs Irwin Starrh Mr and Mrs Louis Starrh and daughter Jess Starrh of Hanford and Gerald Starrh of Los Angeles Mr and Mrs William K Grainger of Bellflower and Mr and Mrs A D Weaver of Porterville Also Mrs Allen Starrh and sons Raymond and Kenneth of Tucson Arizona were house guests at Christmas.
