The Maple district will replace Ralph Gribble with John Johnston, a Bakersfield native and Humboldt State graduate, after 35 years as an educator. Johnston taught in Freshwater near Eureka and Standard school, and will assume duties July 1 with plans to finish a master's degree this summer.

Final Rites Held For Ulysses Allen
Ulysses Allen died February 23 and final rites were conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. by Rev. Sam Wilcoxon of First Southern Church of Shafter with burial in Shafter Cemetery. A Arkansas native, he had lived in Shafter for some time. Survived by widow Eunice Alma and son Steven Paul, five daughters including Mary Ann Safide and Faye Allen, and five brothers Dorie, Jim, Itis, Louis, and Milard.

87th Day Brings Fire to Shafter
Shafter experienced its first city limits fire since November 2 1956 when a truck on east Walker avenue caught fire at 5 26 am. Wimpy Bender of the volunteer fire department said the blaze resulted from the driver failing to release the hand brake and was extinguished before the truck arrived.

Boy Scout Coffee Hour Raises Near Eight Hundred Dollars
The Boy Scout Building Fund of Shafter gained about $800 at a Coffee Hour held Saturday morning at Veterans Memorial Hall. Sponsored by the Shafter Lions Kiwanis Rotary and Maple Leaf Enterprises the event funded upcoming year costs for the scout building. Donations included coffee from J A Folger Coffee Company cream sugar and napkins from Wayne's Dairy and donuts, with Western Automotive and Radio providing background music. Community volunteers from local clubs assisted.
