Athletic programs cut finalized by Kern High District

The Kern High School District has finalized cuts to athletic programs due to funding limits. Varsity football remains, with Bakersfield area schools keeping four pre season and five league games plus one carnival or tournament game. Transportation to games outside the county will be cut. Junior varsity football preseason is reduced to three games with five league contests.

William R Hill receives Army Commendation Medal in Vietnam

Specialist Four William R Hill, 21, son of Perry and Mrs Hill of Shafter, earned the Army Commendation Medal Jan 7 near Pleiku while serving with the 4th Infantry Division. He is a cannoneer with Battery A 6th Battalion 29th Artillery. The medal honors meritorious service and heroic acts while with the Army.

Shafter Generals Clinch SSL Title With Wasco Victory

Shafter High’s Generals clinched the South Sequoia League championship with a 46-41 win over Wasco after edging Garces 71-69 in a dramatic finish. John Snively led with 20 points against Garces. Stuebbe added 19 as Torigiani contributed 12.

Hunter Safety Class Set for March 5 6 at City Hall

Chief Hanley Witcher announces a two evening hunter safety course at City Hall from 7 to 9 p m on March 5 and 6 for ages 10 to 17. Registration is the night of the first class. certificate requires attendance at both sessions. Instructors are Captain Bob Nixon Officer Bob Maupin and E E Williams. The curriculum covers rifle and pistol parts ammunition assembly and safe weapon handling.

Shafter Farmers Lead At National Farmers Organization Meeting

About 200 Kern County farmers attended the Shafter Veterans Hallsession where Shafter farmers were named to leading posts in the National Farmers Organization. Wayne Horn was named vice president and Marvin Neuman elected to a three year Board term.

Three Shafter Wrestlers Reach Valley Finals

Eight Shafter grapplers competed at Selma Divisionals with three advancing to the Valley Finals at Bakersfield College. Danny Black, Jim Brown, and David Kadel earned berths while Shafter tied Sanger for fifth place overall. Black finished second at 141 pounds, Brown placed second at 194, and Kadel won a consolation title and finished third at 168.

William Oscar Caddell of 307 Shaw was cited for failure to yield after a collision at Valley and Ash streets. Joann Harris of Bakersfield was the driver of the other vehicle.

Shafter High to Meet Immanuel Academy in First Round

Shafter High School Generals play Immanuel Academy of Reedley in the first round of the basketball tournament Friday night at 8 at Reedley College gym. A steering committee appointed by Mayor Atkinson seeks city support to develop Hudson Parkette into a hard ball diamond.
