Reported figures from the Cane Cotton Research Station list daily temperatures for February 24 to March 2 with highs and lows and a total wind or rainfall value of 1.65. Entries include dates Feb 25 26 27 28 and Mar 1 2 with varying readings and notes.
Cornelius C. Duerksen, 82, longtime Shafter farmer, died of a heart attack at Loma Linda sanitarium on February 24. Funeral services were held February 27 at Hughes Loma Linda Mortuary with burial at Montecito Memorial Park. Survived by wife Lydia, five daughters, four sons, 34 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and brothers Henry B. and Rne Duerksen.
Max Pearce, assistant postmaster, will address the Shafter Christian Business Men's Committee at the Thursday luncheon. The group meets at the Shafter Veterans Hall with no reservations required for any businessman wishing to attend.
Jean Robinson, 16, Shafter High junior, won the local Lions Club speech contest held Feb 26. She will represent the club in the area contest and plans to attend Bakersfield College to study nursing. Other competitors were Don Goertzen, Alan Neuman, and Carol Van de Valk, with details on ages, family origins, and school activities.
Children of North Camp display at Shafter Library this week during Education Week. Maria Torres, a North Camp teacher, prepared the display case arrangement.
Shafter High School junior Don Stepp was picked to represent the American Legion Robinson Post at the 32nd California Boys State in Sacramento from June 21 to 28. The event trains top juniors from across the state at the State Fair Grounds.
Frank Wisner urges immediate action as Shafter High students and hangers-on fuel a rising drug problem. He blames both families and schools for the spread and accuses local press of not reporting warnings, calling for accountability and community response.
Strato Engineering Company Aircraft Services Division at Shafter Airport expands rapidly. Roy Hubert says 85 employees after a modest summer, in a 32000 square foot hangar leased from the county. The plant makes housing for motion picture projection gear and screens for Boeing 707s under Bell and Howell contract. Payroll climbs by over 50 000 a month. A bomb scare at Shafter High School is under police investigation.
Concerned parents of Shafter and nearby communities have formed a group to share information to help bury users and convict pushers. They aim to aid juveniles and adults with no safe outlet, not to shame offenders. They invite tips anonymously at Box 555, Shafter.
Ex teenage drug addicts from Los Angeles group Teen Challenge will present a program at Shafter High School in a morning assembly and again at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium. The teens share testimonies about their drug problems how they started and how they hid it from parents. The program, not tax supported, is funded by public donations and aims to educate students and parents about drugs.
Friday Shafter hosts a track meet with Garces and Arvin at 4 p.m. The General Diamond team visits West at 3 30. Swimming at Bakersfield College Friday 3 30 and hosts West at 10 a.m. Saturday. golf and tennis also on schedule. SHS coach Jim Rush calls the season wet but swimming looks strong under coach Robert Smith with about 50 swimmers. Key swimmers include Greg Wilcoxon Eric Berger Larry Zachary Bill Bann Blake Fraley Mary Miller Jerri Willis Carol Snively Sandy Ohlsson.
