The Shafter community strengthens its cultural life through a local art association and school programs in art and music. A poster contest for 6th to 8th graders precedes the May Potato Festival while local pianist Bob Haag and Bakersfield musicians perform at a church.
Two Shafter farmer veterans Mike Audap and Jack Thompson advance to the finals of a public speaking contest tied to Kern County young farmer programs. They survived county eliminations and will compete at Bakersfield Inn with a $50 prize for the winner.
At the Shafter Kiwanis meeting held at Cawelo Motel on Wednesday, members watched film programs from the 1948 World Series between the Indians and Braves and the 1948 National Collegiate Basketball Finals with descriptive commentary. Bill Lowe served as program chairman and Hanley Witcher presided at the dinner meeting.
Robert Haag of Shafter placed second at a talent program in the Bakersfield Fox Theatre on Wednesday night. Judges debated the results as Haag gave a brief piano presentation with limited opportunity to display full skill. Haag has previously impressed audiences with strong piano interpretations such as Revolutionary Etude in A Minor.
Dee arrived back in Hampton Shafter Monday following a brief visit. He spent time visiting friends and returning home with familiar faces and hometown support awaiting updates from his travels.
After a faculty ballot at Shafter High School Miss Betty Stringer, junior and student body secretary, was selected to represent Shafter at Girl State in Sacramento this June. The honor reflects her scholarship, character, leadership and fitness, with the American Legion Auxiliary sponsoring the event to educate girls in government through a hands on experience in a simulated city and county administration.
Sukut and C. K. Patton launch a radio repair shop in the Patton Automotive Service building beside Bank of America with March 1 as opening day. Leo L. Sukut will run the shop. he is known locally for managing Anderson Music Shop and has wartime radio instructor experience at Scott Field Yale.
Word from Mrs. Ida Mathis confirms Marine Major Jack R. Mathis is enroute home aboard the U S Army Transport Dalton Victory for final burial in the United States. He was killed on Okinawa May 15, 1945 and will be laid to rest in the Oak Hill Mausoleum in San Jose. He was the eldest son of Mrs. Mathis and brother to Captain Joe Mathis Lieutenant Jim Mathis Jerry Mathis Dixie Mathis and Mrs. Evelyn Robinson of Shafter. Definite docking date of the Dalton Victory in San Francisco awaits word.
Shafter district potato planting is two-thirds complete this week as farmers brace for a banner season. Acreage will be below last year with estimates near 8,500 acres in Shafter and about 42,000 countywide, reflecting a countywide dip from 52,000 acres last year to lower totals this season.
The Shafter Rotary club held its Tuesday noon meeting at Cawelo Motel where Boy Scout official Howard Harper from Bakersfield presented scouting films. District Governor Raymond G. Taylor of Bakersfield announced his official visit next Tuesday. Present were Rotarians Rea A. Hardaway Millard Gibson Les Kiggens Cecil LaCoursa and guests Harvey Neuman Willard Stoller and others.
Kern County's twelfth annual conference on community needs will be held Saturday February 26 at Hotel El Tejon. Clarence Annin of Wasco announced the event with John Urner of Taft named general chairman. The program includes morning panels at 9 30 a m and a public relations luncheon with shop talks on agriculture transportation community needs publicity and legislation. Invitations go to 13 chambers of commerce civic groups and leaders. The theme is Leadership Makes The Difference and the event shapes the coming fiscal year's work plan for the Kern County Chamber of Commerce.
A near finished project at Shafter High includes a modern cafeteria with seating for 250 and a faculty dining room for 20, plus two hygiene classrooms and a home economics room. The $180,000 expansion adds boiler room capacity and a new electrical distribution system as contractors push toward rapid completion.
Construction started Monday on an eight unit addition to Shafter Motel, raising total rooms to 22 from 14. Owner-manager Ralph Boel aims to finish by April 15 with carpeted walls, a full bath, shower, and outside balcony with stairway. This continues improvements since 1947.
The 20 30 Club meets at Cawelo to plan a hard-times party at Motel Cawelo honoring the group's seventh anniversary. Members and guests will wear old clothes with Malory, Shafter, and John Masters of Oildale as masters of ceremonies.
Pete Heinze is due home today after spending several days in San Francisco. He is returning to Shafter to resume normal activities.
Prominent youth speaker and South Hollywood Presby terian Church pastor Rev Wilbur J Antisdale will headline a youth rally tonight February 25 at Mennonite Brethren Church California and Kern Streets. The event, sponsored by Christian Fellowship Youth Organizations of Shafter Bakersfield and Rosedale, features Rosedale Choir selections and a violin duet by Naomi and Elaine Lepp with further numbers listed.
The Shafter police recovered Press Editor Phil Horwith's car seven hours after it was stolen from Central Avenue in front of Fuqua's Cafe. Horwith had left his keys in the vehicle, and officers broadcast the theft to Kern County agencies. The car was found abandoned near Rio Bravo on Taft highway after miles of travel.
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a business meeting on Tuesday March 1 at the Congregational Church. Tentative plans include a visit from Visalia district community service chairman.
Elmer Anderson and Henry Neufeld arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday for a business trip. They met with local executives to discuss potential partnerships and market opportunities in the region.
Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kadel included Mr. and several other visitors from the Oregon area, sharing a family event and conversation during an afternoon gathering.
Shaffer chapter No. 67 Future Farmers of America at Shafter High School marks National Future Farmer Week with a trophy and ribbon display in the Shafter Mercantile window. The showcase features 1948 awards from the Great Western Livestock Show Los Angeles Kern County Fair and California State Fair.
A large turnout attended an initiation ceremony at the Shafter Woman's Club House for thirty new members of the local American Legion Post. Commander Lee Thomas opened the program as Milton Ross led the ritual with a Taft Post team assisting. District Commander Roy Driggers spoke on the Legion and its 1949 program as the post reached 145 members.
William Paul Portnoff of Shafter and 31 other Californians were selected in a U S government drawing for reclamation bureau homestead land. The lands announced include areas around Malin and Coppock Bay in northern California.

A court approved a $200 settlement this week for Donna Denman a three year old Shafter girl injured in a November 4 accident near Blythe Arizona involving a car driven by Robert E Phair of Pasadena The case was heard in Superior Judge Warren Stocton Bakersfield with Mr and Mrs Dock Steele Denman as her parents.
Eddie Granvil Aulston a 19 year old Shafter resident appeared before Judge E K Grant in county justice court on a check passing charge. He was arrested Monday in Wasco by Police Chief Robert Oliver on a warrant for issuing a bogus ten dollar check in Shafter about a month earlier. The warrant was signed by Walter Gregory to whom the bad check was allegedly issued. Aulston was turned over to Constable Blake Dean of Shafter.
