An arsonist tried to burn the Reformed church in Shafter on Sunday using a furnace trap. Ed Schnidt and volunteer help prevented a larger blaze as the church, valued around $3,000, stood intact.
Announcement Tuesday morning states Albert Annis will succeed J C Reily as deputy constable and night watch man in Shafter. Reily becomes constable on February 20 for the new city and has lived in the district since its original colony. He starts duties March 1. Britain is said to have a
Shafter high school boys from the 4 A and 4 B classes planned, sketched, and installed landscaping around the new wings. About 75 shrubs and 200 varieties were planted while freshmen prepared and seeded the new lawns.
Leslie L. Robinson Post approves funds to repaint exterior and wax floors with interior improvements. Legion hall in Shafter represents about 4500 dollars in community investment on county park land. Post has 35 paid members, ten above 1936 quota, aiming for a new member tally soon.
A Shafter couple were found guilty of stealing a pint of apricot nectar from a local grocery. Each was sentenced to 30 days in county jail by Justice of the Peace Allery in Wasco County.

Kern County American Legion group to honor Isaacs former county council commander at Shafter gathering on March 8. Isaacs, Shafter post’s first commander, built the post’s strength and funds, enabling a thriving program and the current post splendidly established. Local veterans praise his work as the occasion honors his leadership.
J. W. Niessen died Sunday after traveling home from Shafter with Mrs. Neissen and their two relatives. The group had spent the winter visiting in Shafter and left the city a few days prior to the fatal Merceda incident.

Funeral services for 15 year old Robert Vergil Hukill were held at 2 30 p m Monday at the Pentecostal Tabernacle. He was the son of Mr and Mrs John W Hukill of Shafter and survived by siblings Ida Ruby Sellas and Otto along with grandparents Mr and Mrs W M Hukill. Burial followed in an unspecified local cemetery.
At Tuesday noon 673 voters had been registered in this district by deputies Sam Lachenmaier and A J Zimmerman. Zimmerman was recently appointed to facilitate the work in district.
A matron reports Mrs. Jack Zimmerman shows improvement following a period of illness. Details indicate steady progress in recovery and stabilization of condition at the hospital.
