The Shafter area hosts a large sugar beet trial with 1000 to 1200 acres in use and over 50 growers involved. Hoover ranch alone has 200 acres set for seed production as researchers test soil and conditions for desired sugar content.
After daily flurries, Shafter reports total seasonal rainfall reaching 2.33 inches. The recent rain ends frosty mornings and brings ideal growing conditions, with widespread rainfall from the Bay region to the Tehachapis noted by C D McArron, Fresno salesman.
The Shafter Farm Center plans a delegation led by Director Adolph Kirschenman to attend the Delano Farm Center banquet on Monday night February 17. California State Farm Bureau Federation President R W Blackburn will speak. The program includes a 12 piece orchestra and the group looks forward to an enjoyable evening.
Matlock, a crop worker from this vicinity, was arrested Tuesday night by Deputy Constable Reily. He is said to have created a disturbance with a bottle.

Plans set for the new Township 12 at Shafter to begin operation Friday morning February 21. Justice F. E. Manuel and Constable J. C. Reily will be sworn in Thursday afternoon as part of the official inauguration. Office furniture and equipment will be installed by then.
Dr M M Kay of Shafter pleaded guilty to one count of violating narcotics reporting rules. He was sentenced to 80 days in Kern county jail with the sentence suspended for two years. The remaining four misdemeanors were dismissed at the request of Deputy District Attorney Warren Stockton.
Preparations are under way for the Kern County Council of the American Legion meeting on Sunday March 8 in Legion Hall hosted by Leslie L Robinson Post of Shafter. Legionnaires from nine posts plus auxiliary representatives will attend. program details will be announced next week after the local post meeting.
During the week a display of rehabilitation specimens by veterans in the soldiers home at Sawtelle has been shown in the Shafter Warehouse window. The items were crafted by disabled service men and offered by Mrs. Elvina Enns of the Shafter district.
Mr and Mrs Edward J five and Mr and Mrs William Seek welcome newborns in Bakersfield. The brief indicates two sets of parents celebrating births with local families named.
Shafter growers and dealers began a week long recap of 1935 outputs. Up to Wednesday 6670 carloads of potatoes were checked along with 11900 bales of cotton 200 carloads of onions 12 carloads of grapes and 154 carloads of fertilizer. Additional wine related and out of district shipments await full totals.
A petition bearing 600 names shows strong local support for Dr M M Kay of Shafter. The pioneer physician faced Wasco Justice Court on five narcotics counts, four of which were dismissed by the district attorney’s representative.
A traveler riding the Santa Fe train from Shafter brought a bowl of goldfish on board and kept it on the seat beside him, sharing a quirky moment with dogs and cats seen crated in the baggage car.
About a third of the World War veterans living in Shafter had completed and mailed their adjusted compensation applications by noon Wednesday. Jack Zimmerman, adjutant of the American Legion post, says he has plenty of blanks and urges veterans to gather credentials and finish the forms to speed the process.
Mrs. Peter Wittenberg of Shafter died at home after returning from church services. Funeral services will be held at Mennonite Brethren church with three ministers officiating. She joined the Mennonite Brethren church in 1916 and was married in 1919. Survived by husband Peter and two children, Arthur and Lenora, plus several siblings and many relatives. Pierce Stays Over Vernon Pierce, the watch maker, announces he will remain in Shafter for about two more weeks.
Lawrence Chenoweth superintendent of Bakersfield schools will address the Shafter Business News Association banquet at the Wednesday Afternoon Clubhouse on the evening of March 6. Ray Dye, president, announced the plan noting arrangements are in early stages and music is planned for the event.
Anastacio Garcia, 17, epileptic, died after falling into an open fire in the family yard near Shafter. His mother warned him to stay away. neighbors pulled him from flames and rolled him to douse the fire before he was rushed to Bakersfield emergency hospital. Funeral services were held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. He is survived by his mother and two brothers.
Bakersfield American Legion Post drum and bugle corps, champion of the San Joaquin Valley, will headline the Kern County Council event in Shafter on March 8. A. J. Zimmerman announced the all day council session and the entertainment to liven the proceedings.
A new electric popcorn and peanut roasting machine began operation at Valentine’s Fountain Cafe in Shafter last Sunday. Marketed as French fried corn, the device pops kernels in drawn butter and serves corn with added melted butter. The machine also roasts peanuts and Valentine reports strong demand for popcorn.
William Bestwater Daniel Wendland and Ernest Hart traveled to Redwood Canyon on Sunday. They encountered heavy snow and were forced to walk the final miles to their destination.
