Richland district boards tentative raises and health cap hike
Richland School District Board considered tentative contracts with the California School Employees' Association and Richland Teachers Association raising salaries by 3 percent and increasing health and welfare caps for 2002 03. Confidential employees and yard supervisors would see smaller increases, while a possible 1/2 percent boost for the superintendent was also on the table. Budget projections show a $800,000 to $850,000 deficit this year despite federal funds adding $293,513. Projected General Fund ending balances exceed $3.5 million current year and remain strong through 2004 05.

Teen swimmer Jensen aims for Athens 2004 gold
Arsen Jensen, 17, a former Shafter resident now at Mission Viejo High School, gained national attention after ranking at nationals in Fort Lauderdale and earning world championship experience in Yokohama and Japan. He trained with Bakersfield coach Jim Richey and rose through regional programs at the Shafter Aquatic Center before moving to California’s coast.

SHS Winter Guard, guided by Pam Keillor, moved from Division A to AA and captured a First Place trophy at a regional color guard event. Team members Amity Noble Aubrea Allred Gina Flores Dominique Castro Mariana Keillor auditioned in indoor shows, performing The Dream of the Golden Dragon with Asian folk medleys. They prepare for East High Clovis on February 21 and Shafter Central California Meet on March 15, a full day event at Richland School District that attracts around 2000 participants and funds their program.
