City council weighs dairy buffer near Shafter Wasco

Citizens urged tighter controls as map shows proposed agricultural buffer around Shafter and Wasco. Staff seeks Kern County Board of Supervisors approval for a two mile buffer, aiming to limit new dairies outside city limits while not affecting existing facilities.

Patty Houchin remembered as community contributor in Buttonwillow

Patricia Eileen Houchin 75 died February 18 2003 at home in Buttonwillow surrounded by family. She and late husband Dutch were longtime cotton growers and community benefactors active in politics and youth programs. Services held February 24 at Greenlawn Memorial Chapel Bakersfield.

Valerie Fain to Represent SHS at Girls State

Wake Island memory of Clifton Sanders in time of war

Margaret Baker recalls Clifton Sanders a Shafter resident who joined the Marines in 1939 and fought on Wake Island in 1941 as defense troops and air raids pounded the island for 16 days. The Sanders family migrated from Oklahoma to California in the 1930s before returning.
