Richland Chess Club Awards Night Planned

The Richland school chess club schedules its ninth annual awards meeting for Thursday February 16 at 7 pm in the Richland Cafeteria. Prizes are funded by the Shafter Recreation Commission. A first girls championship is announced with Susie Taylor and others competing.

Forged Checks Cashed Across Shafter Area

A two day fraud ring cashed 18 forged checks in Shafter and nearby towns on January 27 and 28. Forgeries targeted Doyle Hurst and Jimmy Ray Hurst with checks drawn on Brawley and other banks. Warrants issued for Em Mettler and Sons suspects. bail set at 2200 dollars each.

Camp Jr elected to California Growers Council board

W. B. Camp Jr of Shafter has been elected to the board of governors of the Council of California Growers. J. T. Sanders of Bakersfield named as alternate. The Council met inVenterey February 7. Crawford began work at the County Superintendent's office with the Richland Board of Trustees approval.

Shafter Council Revises Fire Rating Bureau Picks

The Shafter City Council reviewed Pacific Fire Rating Bureau recommendations to boost fire capacity, selecting seven prime items such as annual gate valve inspections, hydrant records, biannual inspections, minimum four firefighter crews, yearly pumper tests, and three way radios on all apparatus. The council delaying the fire training tower and noted letters from the Shafter Women’s Club opposing freeway placement.

Youth Held In Assault With Deadly Weapon

A 17 year old Shafter boy is being held by juvenile authorities for allegedly assaulting another youth with a knife during a Saturday night incident at Shafter High School. He faces further claims of attempted car theft and burglary at Beech Avenue Market.

Bicycle Safety Program Completed At Richland School

Sgt. Earl O'Brien and Officer Williams finished a bicycle safety training at Rich land School. The course taught how children should handle strangers and was sponsored by the Junior Woman's Club and Richland School.

Richland Orchestra Trip Fundraising Efforts Grow

The Richland Teachers Club funded part of a Las Vegas trip for the Richland Orchestra with 150 dollars toward an estimated 2000 dollars. The Chamber of Commerce added 350 dollars and will manage donations from local businesses and offices to cover the costs.

Richland Orchestra Seeks Funds for Las Vegas Trip

The Richland Orchestra under Richard Southwick seeks donations from local business leaders and private individuals to cover travel to Las Vegas on March 22.
