John H. Maurer a Shafter pioneer who arrived in 1919 was buried Monday at the Memorial Park Mausoleum Bakersfield Rev Lewis D Smith of Bakersfield First Christian Church officiated He died Friday Feb 3 in a Bakersfield hospital after a hip injury suffered when a person under his care was placed beside his wife Esther who died in 1959 Maurer born Nov 21 1884 in Ashland Kentucky son of John Henry and Elizabeth Maurer He lived in Ashland LA Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz where he married Knapp in 1908 and worked as an electrical engineer before moving to Francisco Continued on Page 6

Richland Teachers Seek Higher Salary Scale Adjustment
The Richland Teachers Club led by spokesman Lewis Sutton opened talks with the Richland School Board on a new salary schedule for next year. Their package projects total salaries rising from 64 000 to 731 000, including a 24 000 increment, proposing use of the high school scale through step 11 to boost retention and recruitment.
