Richland teachers seek 17 percent raise in wage dispute

Negotiations between Richland School District and Richland Teachers Association escalated with a February rally in front of the district office. City approves proclamations for Shafter Harness Week

The Shafter City Council approved two proclamations at a Monday meeting. One declares February 18 to 24 as Shafter Harness Racing Week, honoring the Shafter Lions Club and Joe O’Brien for promoting the event. The second proclaims February 10 to April 1 for Kern County Society for Crippled Children and Adults fundraising, with Lori Ingram and Chag Verango as this year’s sweethearts.

Secret Witness reward offered for Shafter burglaries

Police report a burglary at Dr. McClosky's Dental Office on Central Avenue with entry by breaking a plaster hole and theft of items including syringes. A $500 Secret Witness reward is offered for information leading to arrests and convictions, with another $500 for malicious mischief in the California and Munzer area. Authorities note repeated acts of mischief, grapefruit and pipe fittings hurled at homes, and ongoing stakeouts without stopping the crime. City Council Forum set for March 27 in Shafter

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture announced a city council forum for March 27 at 7 p.m. in the Shafter Veterans Hall with Dick Larson as moderator. Each candidate gets five minutes, followed by audience questions and refreshments. Preferential talk included potential supervisorial forum, festival planning, and cloud seeding inquiry pending county input.

Richland School Board sets inservice and minimum day plans

The Richland School District Board of Trustees set February 6 as a minimum day for student attendance to administer proficiency testing and February 15 as an inservice day at the Primary School with workshop leader Dr. Jo Stanchfield of Occidental College. The board also designated February 11 and June 20 as local holidays for 12 month employees, approved substitute staff appointments, and approved several fund raising activities for the sixth grade while noting emergency bus repairs and potential depletion of rainy day funds.
