Shafter could become a prettier city if residents and civic groups apply effort to beautify the town. The Wednesday Afternoon club stages a yearly flower show and advocates tree plantings and paint up campaigns to raise curb appeal and create a lasting tradition of beauty.
Rev. J. Fred Jordan president and founder of the American Soul Clinic will address a local audience at the First Baptist Church Tuesday night. He will be accompanied by five year old prodigy Johnny Luther who preaches sings and directs the audience in song. The public is invited to learn about the organization history and its soul treatment successes.
Mrs. Mary Roben Autrey celebrates her 105th birthday at her North Shafter home with daughters Annie Williams and Josie Marlow. She recalls travels to Oklahoma, Oregon visits, and a recent non stop trip with friends, saying life after 105 remains quiet yet eventful.
Announcement: Bill Edgerton from Claremont joins A. Peter Ohanneson’s firm to ease heavy workload in Shafter and Wasco practice. Loyola graduate, former Claremont and Upland practitioner since 1945, served in U S Army during war. Edgerton to practice in Champsom office with Al Mortimore returning in April.
Stockdale Rotary holds annual Ladies Night at the Stockdale Country Club with District Governor H W Kelly and Mrs. Kelly as honored guests. E B Stringham chairs arrangements as a Valentine themed semi formal dinner replaces the noon meeting with a round table at Canelo Motel for non attending members at 2:00 PM.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce unanimously passed a resolution urging voluntary electricity conservation amid a severe drought and looming power shortage. Ray Sirman of P G and E explained the scarcity and urged lights out, dark storefronts, and reduced neon and sign lighting to stretch supplies through the year.
Campaign chair Joe Frizzell announced the Shafter drive raised 812.36 with 36.51 from a Thursday benefit game between faculty and a gym-class all star team. Theatres contributed 43.22, Cub Scouts collected 111.04 door to door, and Richland and Maple schools added hundreds more.
Kiwanis members rushed to Bakersfield to donate blood for Jack Manweiler who suffered a hemorrhage from stomach ulcers. Fourteen volunteers traveled in three cars, with Jack Hare and Al Finkbeiner among early donors, as club leadership alerted members quickly.
A community notes birthdays this week including Mrs. Menno Siemens and Mrs. Wm. Dalke with Feb. 7 and Feb. 8 dates, Sandra K. Wipf, Mrs. Katie Mettler, and Mrs. Doris Bowlie on Feb. 8 to Feb. 10, Isaac Weigand and Mary Roben Autrey on Feb. 10, 105 year old Mrs. Harry Blumkin on Feb. 11, Leonard Gaede Feb. 12, W. J. Suckut Feb. 12, Ben Stoller Feb. 13, and Lydia Fast Feb. 13.
Last Wednesday afternoon 254 dogs were vaccinated in a four hour clinic at the county fire station. Dr. Walter Stiern of a Bakersfield veterinary hospital performed the injections. City residents must have both city and county licenses, while outlying areas require only a county license. among the vaccinated, 76 received city licenses and 178 county licenses only.
Three of the five Shafter City Council members face election on April 8. Petitions circulate February 13 with a March 4 filing deadline. Incumbents William Lachenmaier Glen O Nay and J W Frizzell term out this year Frizzell will not seek reelection.
Shafter's varsity basketball team, decimated by injuries and withdrawals, beat Tehachapi 37 to 30 in a hard fought Friday game but lost 38 to 25 to Taft on Saturday. First-string forwards Scales and Farr left the squad, Benny Day is sidelined by illness, and ace guard John Nikkel was not in shape.
Shafter suffers 38 25 defeat as Taft dominates with Foote scoring 11 and Duke tallying 9 for Shafter. B team ties Taft lightweights in regulation but loses in OT. John Kelly leads Shafter with 11 points. Taft C squad leads 24 10 at game end, Case scoring 10 and Bryant 7.
Maple P T A president Mrs E J Peters called a February 5 meeting in the Maple Science room to discuss student aid and hear Mrs Patricia McAllester present 4 H Club work. The board agreed to recommend to Maple district parents that they help local girls and boys form a 4 H Club. Members present included Mr Ralph Gribble et al.
Tehachapi upsets Shafter 37 to 30 after an 11 point rally late in the fourth quarter as Packard leads Tehachapi with strong forward play and Keet Duke shines for Shafter. Shafter B and C squads also prevail in their games, with strong guard play from Kelly and Heaton Johns.
