Soul Clinic Leader to Speak at Local Rally

Rev. J. Fred Jordan president and founder of the American Soul Clinic will address a local audience at the First Baptist Church Tuesday night. He will be accompanied by five year old prodigy Johnny Luther who preaches sings and directs the audience in song. Chamber Urges Conservation of Electricity Here

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce unanimously passed a resolution urging voluntary electricity conservation amid a severe drought and looming power shortage. Ray Sirman of P G and E explained the scarcity and urged lights out, dark storefronts, and reduced neon and sign lighting to stretch supplies through the year.

Local March of Dimes Drive Tops $812 in Shafter

Campaign chair Joe Frizzell announced the Shafter drive raised 812.36 with 36.51 from a Thursday benefit game between faculty and a gym-class all star team. Theatres contributed 43.22, Cub Scouts collected 111.04 door to door, and Richland and Maple schools added hundreds more.

Kiwanis Blood Drive Aids Stricken Member

Kiwanis members rushed to Bakersfield to donate blood for Jack Manweiler who suffered a hemorrhage from stomach ulcers. Fourteen volunteers traveled in three cars, with Jack Hare and Al Finkbeiner among early donors, as club leadership alerted members quickly.

Dogs Vaccinated in Shafter Sees 254 Shots Administered

Last Wednesday afternoon 254 dogs were vaccinated in a four hour clinic at the county fire station. Dr. Walter Stiern of a Bakersfield veterinary hospital performed the injections. City residents must have both city and county licenses, while outlying areas require only a county license. among the vaccinated, 76 received city licenses and 178 county licenses only.

Filing Starts For City Council Posts In Shafter

Three of the five Shafter City Council members face election on April 8. Petitions circulate February 13 with a March 4 filing deadline. Incumbents William Lachenmaier Glen O Nay and J W Frizzell term out this year Frizzell will not seek reelection.

Undermanned Shafter Cagers Fall to Taft and Tehachapi

Shafter's varsity basketball team, decimated by injuries and withdrawals, beat Tehachapi 37 to 30 in a hard fought Friday game but lost 38 to 25 to Taft on Saturday. First-string forwards Scales and Farr left the squad, Benny Day is sidelined by illness, and ace guard John Nikkel was not in shape.
