Potato Planting Underway in Edison and Shafter Areas
The article notes early potato planting near completion in Edison and rising activity in Shafter as growers await warmer weather. Government data estimate California 1949 plantings at about 75 000 acres versus 80 060 in 1948, with national early planting projected around 151 300 acres, down from last year’s 168 100. Extreme cold and midwest storms strained supplies, supported by San Diego brokers who moved seed potatoes to meet demand. Washington’s January stock reports show continued high potato reserves.
