Dr. Margaret Mead argues for a world organization to avert atomic war. She praises the American constitution and suggests if American leaders focus on a workable plan, the best minds could devise a global government balancing diverse national interests.
The Shafter Unit of the Young Farmers Association met at Shafter High School with Wm. Buerkle of Buttonwillow giving the address. He chairs the California Farm Bureau Commission on field crops and serves on the National Farm Bureau advisory committee.
Private William D. Hobbs is returned from Luzon to Shafter for burial services. A military honor guard will meet the casket and escort it to Flickinger Jansen Mortuary for state, then burial at Shafter Cemetery. Services are set for Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Pentecostal Church of God with full military honors.
Prospective members of a night school bookkeeping class at the high school met with instructor Thomas Letizia to arrange study plans. Eligible are those beyond high school age with one year of bookkeeping or equivalent. no charge. Call 4611. A minimum 15 enrollment is required. if met, the first session will be February 15, Tuesdays 7 to 9 p.m.
Greg Thannes is dedicating time to his studies at the City University, balancing academic work with campus life as he advances in his program.
National Boy Scout Week draws local participation with an upcoming Northern District Court of Honor in Delano on Thursday. Shafter youths joined the Bakersfield parade last Saturday for an estimated crowd of 2000, while Rotary Troop 53 and Cub Pack 13 marked Scout Sunday at Union Congregational Church.
The Junior Women's Club of Shafter promotes a benefit dance at the Women's Club House on February 19 to support the March of Dimes. Polio cases rise nationwide with Kern County reporting over 250, funds drained, and the event aims to replenish finances. Tickets are $2.40 per couple, with Jack Bertrand’s Bakersfield orchestra playing 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Merle Bartel departs for Berkeley to attend the College of Medicine at the University of California. A Bakersfield Junior College graduate, he worked at the Shafter Press as pressman and mailing department head for three years and is the son of Rev. and Mrs. John Bartel. Herman A. Davis has taken his Press staff role.
Shafter plans a final push for the March of Dimes drive this week led by campaign chairman Joe Frizzell. Cub Scouts collected 86.65 and theaters added about 242. Funds from a February 19 dance by the Junior Women’s club go to the drive. A Shafter High Faculty vs Students basketball game is set today at the high school gym to boost contributions.
The Kern County Tuberculosis and Health Association will operate a mobile x ray unit in Shafter from February 14 to 18. It will visit Shafter High School Richland Grammar School County building Lerdo Maple Kern Academy Pablo's Grocery and the Mexican colony with hours for students and adults including 1:00 to 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. on designated days.
The first wing of the Stringham Medical Building opened yesterday in Shafter. Dr H W Voth moved in as associate, with plans for two doctors in the completed North wing. The three-division structure includes X ray, surgery, exam rooms, and special maternity facilities. Formal opening awaits full completion in about three weeks.
The Central Valley Highway Association holds its regular quarterly dinner meeting in Corcoran at the Cotton Club to mark the fourth anniversary of its 1945 founding. Residents and guests are urged to attend as the group promotes improvements along the Central Valley Highway from Bakersfield to Selma and beyond.
More than 120 Rotarians and guests are expected at the Shafter Rotary Ladies Night dinner at Stockdale Country Club tomorrow. The event begins at 7 30 p m with Bob Bisson’s orchestra providing entertainment and ladies receive corsages.
The Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District Board discussed the San Joaquin Valley water situation with two Bureau of Reclamation officials from Fresno. No decisions were made but contracts for permanent water supply through the Central Valley Project were reviewed. The board also canvassed and approved last week's election results naming three directors, with Rolf Jacobsen and Clarence Annin re-elected.
