Shafter Chamber Honors Local Leaders at Banquet
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce presented Citizen of the Year to Bill Prout and Humanitarian Award to Sandy Armstrong with Young Person Jordan Lewis and Business honor to Larry. The event opened with a flag salute led by Jordan Lewis and an invocation by Pastor L V Lawson. Prime rib dinner was served by Hodels in Bakersfield. Judge Gary Ingle spoke on leaving the century with class and improving Shafter, praising local government and community spirit.

Shafter Police Department to reorganize staff
The Shafter Police Department will create two new positions Captain and Clerk Typist to replace unfilled roles. The changes, approved at the January council meeting, shift duties from a former Sergeant and Civilian Administrative Services post to cash in on revenue for a Captain. Chief John Zrofsky says the move reorganizes administrative tasks and frees him to focus on duties, with both new roles to be advertised competitively.

Kern County to gain new 661 area code in 1999 split
The 805 area code will be divided with Kern County mainly served by the new 661 code starting February 13 1999. A six month get acquainted dialing period allows calls to be made without the area code between 805 and 661. The change affects local numbers stationing Shafter Wasco Buttonwillow and eastern 805 areas while western 805 remains unchanged.
