Christmas Ban in Boston Echoes Through History
History notes Boston banned Christmas in public schools for 22 years after Puritan settlers opposed it as unholy and linked to English customs. The 1659 ban grouped Christmas with gambling and other “lawless” acts, revoked in 1681 by Sir Edmund Andros, yet many colonists continued abstaining. Samuel Sewell’s 1685 diary records ongoing reluctance to enforce observance.
