Groundbreaking honors Shafter Youth Center project
The 1.3 million Shafter Youth Center breaks ground on East Euclid Avenue opposite Kirshenmann Park. CAP and City of Shafter, with Richland School District, donate 249000 from Lerdo School land profits to fund the center. Plans include a gym, classrooms, kitchen and offices for ages 6 to 21.

The Shafter Press will be closed December 2 for Christmas and January 1, 2003 for New Year. Deadline changes move up one workday for news, classifieds, display ads, and legal ads. Richland District Renames Schools and Plans New Sequoia Elementary
At the December 9, 2002 meeting the Richland Board of Trustees adopted new school names for all sites. Golden Oak Elementary will replace Richland Primary, Redwood Elementary for Richland Intermediate, and Richland Senior Elementary remains on record. A new Sequoia Elementary School is planned as the district builds a K-5 campus and renovates the old BUILDING.

Death of Shafter pioneer family member Dean Hatfield Potter Jr
Dean Hatfield Potter Jr. 89 of El Cerrito, son of Shafter pioneer Dean Hatfield Potter Sr. and Julia Anderson Potter, died recently. Born in 1913 in Nevada, he moved to Shafter as a child, helped farm 80 acres, and graduated Shafter High School in 1933. He studied agriculture at Bakersfield College, then became a telegrapher clerk at Shafter Depot for Santa Fe, later rising to conductor before the Santa Fe passenger service ended in 1971.

Richland and neighboring districts held the Region XVII Oral Language Festival with 4th to 8th graders performing solo duo and verse choir across Serious and Humorous categories. Judges named first and second place winners in 14 interpretation categories, trophies awarded in the Activity Center. Maple declined to participate.
