Cotton Research Station Opens In Shafter Area

The California Planting Cotton Seed Distributors opened a new 40 acre Research and Development station near Shafter on December 14. Dr. H B Cooper, former USDA Shafter leader, directs the facility which will employ about 15, serves to extend Acala SJ varieties, and continues joint work with USDA and University of California. The CPCSD, formed in 1936, runs seed distribution for the San Joaquin Valley with nearly 3,000 growers members and a 15 member board.

Shafter Chamber votes $6000 to move Santa Fe Depot

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture approved giving $6,000 from its building fund to the Shafter Historical Society to relocate the Santa Fe Depot. The Society will receive a permanent office in the depot, but funds are still needed for moving the building and its foundation. The Chamber re elected Mary Siemens as President and announced a January 19, 1980 Installation Banquet with roast beef dinner and community awards.

Two men get probation and fines for exhibition of speed

In Shafter Lonnie Johnson and David Alan Neal each received three years probation and a $130 fine for exhibition of speed and power on a motor cycle described as wheeling or popping wheelies. Police noted a weekend marked by family disputes and bling. The California Farm Bureau opposes the act and urged the Chamber to adopt a resolution. The Agriculture Commissioner in each county would approve every pesticide application under the act.

Richland School Board approves new evaluation plan

The Richland School District Board of Trustees changed the meeting date to Monday and ratified a new teacher evaluation plan. Tenured teachers are evaluated every other year while probationary staff are evaluated annually, with Wasco references removed from the prior plan. Substitutes Olga Lopez Florence Owens Ann Wiswall Jennie Farelas were hired and several trustees attended a California conference on public education.

Sheriff warns on new earnings withholding rules orientation set

Deputy explains changes taking effect January 1 1980 including wage garnishments replaced by Earnings Withholding Orders. Creditors and employers urged to attend December 19 session at Bakersfield Sheriff's Department classroom to learn responsibilities under the new procedures.

Merchants plan downtown caroling and committee events

The Shafter Merchants Committee discussed downtown caroling plans at the December meeting held at Yee's Steak House. Officers will be elected in January, and a letter inviting merchants to join the committee was approved. The group, chaired by Sandy Wiedmann, funds promotions through monthly memberships and advertising to boost shopping in Shafter.
