City moves to declare depot historic and plan relocation

Shafter City Council adopted a resolution to declare the Shafter 7 Fe. Depot historic and allow its move to a new location. City Administrator Bill Sheldon noted code hurdles but said moving and restoring the building would be hindered by strict code adherence. The Historical Society aims to have the building at the new site by January 10.

Atkinson launches candidacy for First District supervisor

J C Atkinson announces run for Kern County First District supervisor amid concerns the county government is too large and costly. A longtime Shafter resident and former mayor, he highlights service in building inspection, city council, school district boards, and community roles. He and his wife Bernice reside in Shafter with three sons.

North Shafter public meeting on sewer service plan

Kern County and its Community Development Department call North Shafter residents to a public meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday December 13 in Veterans Memorial Hall at California and James. County funds support a three year plan to provide local match for state and federal grants to build a sewer system connecting to the city area. County and city representatives will explain costs and procedures, with a Spanish interpreter available. Call Greenlee at 861-2041 or Supervisor Tackett’s office for details.

Suit filed by former Shafter officer Edwards seeks reinstatement

Edwards Anthony Edwards a former Shafter police officer and investigator filed a writ of mandate against Kern County and the State seeking to set aside three adverse actions restore his job provide back pay and attorney fees He and another officer were suspended in July with termination recommendations later one officer was terminated The city alleges union busting after the officers joined PORAC The suspensions were revisited in August and October A review board heard charges including failure to wear a vest failure to log time and conducting an internal inquiry Some charges were upheld with disciplinary action others dropped Edwards ultimate termination followed an October suspension The city plans to defend on the basis of the prior hearings Only past hearings will be considered no new evidence Edwards lived in St Helena and had joined the SPD in 1977 as an investigator

U.S.D.A. workers save 94 year old Shafter woman

Three Shafter residents and U.S.D.A. Cotton Station employees rescued Dora Rilcoff from a December 5 house fire at 17036 Shafter Avenue. Rilcoff suffered third degree burns and was taken to a Bakersfield hospital as fire caused $16,000 in structure loss and $23,500 in contents.

Free Ride Reminder During Holidays From Shafter Police

Shafter Police urge holiday shoppers to place packages in trunks and keep vehicles locked. Police Chief Gene Kaplan says if you are intoxicated, call for a ride within a mile of Shafter. they would rather help than arrest. The week saw few thefts of Christmas ornaments and quiet activity overall. Douglas Wayne Fuller received three years probation after being found guilty. Jose Castillo pled guilty to suspended license and unregistered vehicle charges and paid a $195 fine. Linda Thacher paid a $75 fine for no driver’s license and failing to yield to red lights and sirens.

Cotton Seminar Invites Shafter Farmers to Nematode Talk

The Shafter USDA Cotton Research Station invites interested farmers to the third seminar in the series. Nematologist Ed Jorgenson will discuss nematode management. The session starts at 7 p m in the west conference room on Thursday December 13 with most research staff present for informal participation.
