The Santa Fe announces a January start on more than a mile of new trackage in Shafter freight yards. Projects include extending Richland spur, adding an 80 car storage track, and building a west end spur for a planned warehouse. Local workers will be sought under Fred Rahmgren supervision.

Eddie Page leads his own company and performs comedy. the opening night drew a small crowd though the audience appreciated the performance. Grammar School Students Begin One Week Christmas Vacation
More than 700 students at Richland grammar school start Christmas vacation Friday afternoon. The break lasts one week with students returning Monday December 80. New Year’s Day will be observed as a holiday for one day this term.

Bond Election Set for $200,000 Improvements
Kern County Union High School trustees will resubmit a bond proposal of 200000 dollars at an election on Friday January 17. After deliberations the board announced this is the district’s only option to proceed. Earlier a very light turnout narrowly defeated the issue. Shafter voters supported it 91 to 5.

Garnet Riley age 16 a Shafter High student sustained a compound fracture of his right arm last week while helping Lewis Edwards start a car in front of the school. Dr M M Kay treated him and he was taken to Bakersfield where the fracture was reduced and cast. X rays show the break knitting well and he has returned to classes.

Eastman Dies by Own Hand Near Shafter
Floyd J. Eastman 67 a well known rancher living four miles northeast of Shafter died by suicide Thursday evening about 5 o clock He shot himself in the head with a .32 caliber automatic pistol and died about one and a half hours later An inquest yielded no motive His widow testified he took the pistol from a drawer as she turned away Funeral services were held at Janzen Funeral Home Shafter with Rev Edwards and the body cremated in Fresno He is survived by his widow a daughter and two grandsons Nancy Eastman Ruth Kreuger Floyd and Calvin Eastman.

Richland School Christmas Program Set By Faculty
Richland school students up to fifth grade will present the annual Christmas program tonight in the auditorium. Shafter's Business Men's Association votes $150 toward securing a small right of way in Tulare county to build a new road section south of Shafter. Corcoran and Hanford each pledge $150, Wasco expected to participate. Southern California Roads Co. of Los Angeles won the contract to grade and surface 5.1 miles south of Shafter, forming Highway 139 with work to begin near the northern junction with the Golden State highway.
