Threat Of Fire Averted By Santa Fe Yard Crew
A Santa Fe yard crew on duty in the local rail yards spotted a fire in trash near the L. A. Camp Gun on Walker Street at about 3 30 am Sunday. They alerted authorities, and city volunteer and county fire departments contained the blaze, preventing spread to nearby buildings. The trash included cotton remnants and odds and ends. A separate late Saturday call near The Hut on James Street reported a car fire at 9 30 but it proved a false alarm.

Dresser Falls on Minter Village Tot, Fatal Accident
Vernon James Holden, a 3 year old from Minter Village, died after a dresser toppled onto him in the home. He lived about 12 hours post accident and died at a Bakersfield hospital. Born in Lawton Oklahoma on August 15 1945 he was the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Holden. Services set for Flickinger Janzen Mortuary at 2 pm with burial in Shafter Cemetery conducted by Reverend Bernard Andrews. He is survived by siblings Maggie Lorene Marie Jack and Charles.

County Ginning Figures Decline in Kern County
In Kern county through December 15 a total of 226,221 bales of cotton were ginned, about 4,000 short of the 1947 yearly total. County agricultural commissioner Lewis A.
