Shafter High School lost the championship football game on Saturday but the team played well and showed strong sportsmanship. Parents and townspeople expressed pride in the players, band, and crowd behavior, noting the school administration and coaching staff helped build discipline and courtesy that benefit the community and country.
Maple grammar school's annual Christmas program will be held Thursday evening December 18 at 7 30 p.m. in the school auditorium. The event replaces the December PTA meeting and features the Maple School Band, first to seventh and eighth grades, and the Glee Club performing a mix of carols and two act play titled Christmas Stocking.
Final touches were made on Christmas displays across Shafter as neighborhoods prepare for the annual contest sponsored by the 20-30 club. Local residents challenge each other with elaborate plaques and decor in a festive competition across neighborhoods.
A large fire destroyed the Shafter City Jail offices in the early hours, causing about $10,000 in damage. A short circuit is suspected near the center of the office. The blaze gutted the room but vital records largely survived. Three prisoners were removed safely by Officer Jack Dial. Temporary police quarters are set up in the City Fire Department building. Fire and police credited with saving records and aiding prisoner safety.
W N Abbott of Oildale, father of Percy Abbott of Shafter and brother of Mrs Fred Christensen of Shafter, died Sunday noon at his Oildale home. Abbott was well known in Shafter. Greenlawn Funeral Directors of Bakersfield handle arrangements, pending.
Richland students perform Why The Chimes Rang in an evening show to benefit parents, with music by the school band under Fred Curtain and carols by the Glee Clubs directed by Martha Gloeckler. Cast includes Steen Charles Wright and Robert Mettler, Holger Jack Hughes and David Muir, Uncle Bertel actors, and other roles with gifts bearers listed. costumes by Burnis Morris and scenery by Mrs. Kirkham and Miss Holmes. production led by Fred Hasty and Gladys Hyland.
The Shafter 20 30 club sponsors a new Oildale unit meeting Tuesdays at 7 30 p.m. Circle Inn Bakersfield traffic circle. Chartering expected in eight weeks with 18 current members and 25 to 30 expected. Temporary chairman O D Handel of Shafter club appointed.
David Horn, 28, of Shafter was killed Sunday morning when a crop dusting airplane struck him while he signalled the pilot at the end of a two mile field between Shafter and Cawelo. Pilot Jack Stepp, of Atwood Crop Dusters, was not at fault and landed back at Minter Field after the crash.
In a small schools championship playoff at Shafter, Woodlake rallies in the final minute to beat the Generals 26 20. Woodlake feasted on pressure late as Glynn Scales and Bob Scales connected on key passes and Cassity punched in scores after early miscues.
The Shafter High School football banquet is set for tomorrow night in the Richland Schools cafeteria. Dudley DeGroot will be guest speaker, introduced by Jack Hilton. Event funded by $50 donations from sponsors and attended by players fathers faculty and town supporters.
Cosgrove manager of Shafter Bank of America named president of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce for 1948. Wm. Stoller is vice president. directors include Hemingson Channeson Fike Ohlsson Newell Panero. Panero to lead year after a busy past, with Kern County Fair exhibit and Christmas decoration program.
W. E. Ainsworth, 38, died nine hours after arriving at Bakersfield hospital with severe burns from a natural gas explosion near a tent home in the Rio Bravo Oil Field. Kathleen Ivery, 22, remained in crucial condition. The victims worked for J. T. Howze, leasing the land, while county officials investigated the cause of the blast.
Six weekend offenders were processed at the temporary police HQ in the Shafter City Fire Department building, set up after a Friday morning fire. Arrested and jailed are John Lamb, Thomas Asteen, Joe Hamilton, Fay Merriman, Lester Merriman, and Roy Demonbrium. Asteen and Demonbrium face County Court with Judge E K Grant. the others appear before City Justice Court Judge Frank Shaw.
