Bits and Pieces Cues to Kern County’s Water Challenge

Post Office Plans More Daily Drops For Yale Season

Postmaster Gene Guenther announced extended daily hours from 8 30 a m to 5 30 p m weekdays starting December 18 through December 23 with normal hours to resume afterward. Extra Saturday service set for December 14 and 21 from 8 30 a m to 5 p m.

Final Rites Held Monday Morning For Local Woman

Funeral services for Elizabeth Janzen 68 of 217 Orange St. were held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Mennonite Brethren Board with Rev. E. N. Hiebert officiating. Interment followed in Shafter Cemetery. Survived by widower Henry N. Janzen. children Albert and Clarence. daughters Malinda and Rosalee. brothers Jake and John Heinrichs. 11 grandchildren. Armstrong Mortuary handled arrangements.

Jail Youths for Damaging Farm Equipment Here

Three Shaftermen admitted guilt to malicious mischief after damaging farm equipment at the Robert Neuman and Emanuel Neuman farms near here. Rayborn Painter and Wayne Harris both 18 of Smith's Corner received 180 days in county jail. A 17 year old was committed to authorities by Judge Fred Pritschke. Deputy C White arrested them December 6 after their car tires stuck in mud. they offered no resistance.

Schools Out For Xmas Vacations Notice

Shafter students finish for Christmas on December 20 and return January 6. Richland district will not hold a school board meeting on December 24 as scheduled.

Siren Attack Warning Planned Across Southland

Shafter will join 170 other Southland jurisdictions in a full-scale siren test at 10:00 a m on December 27. The three minute cycle includes a three part sound sequence and is conducted to evaluate coverage and effectiveness of local sirens under Region 1 and the Federal Civil Defense Administration.

SPUD Drills Seventh Water Well in Shafter

Shafter Public Utilities district reports the seventh well is complete at the intersection of Shafter avenue and Walker street. The 700 foot bore reached capacity of 2800 gallons per minute during two days of test runs with 200 feet perforation to keep oil out and 150 feet of 26 inch conductor pipe shut off surface contamination. Under normal conditions it is expected to pump about 1400 gpm, improving water pressure for residents next summer.

Veterans Service Officer Visit Set for Bakersfield

Jack Janzen adjutant of the American Legion announced a veterans service officer will be at Veterans Memorial Hall next Tuesday from 9 to 1 to answer veteran matter questions in free consultations. Eston Reynolds of Bakersfield will participate.

City workers to receive turkeys as compensation

City Attorney Al Mortimore devised a method to provide Christmas turkeys to City and SPUD employees by creating an employment compensation fund. The council approved using the fund to purchase the turkeys, avoiding direct gift restrictions and labeling it compensation.

Modern street lights to brighten Shafter business district

Central avenue in Shafter will gain 30 mercury vapor lights after year start. Superintendent Jack Harris says the project, replacing old yellow lamps from Five Points to Central Valley highway and on James street, boosts night patrols, driving, and district appeal. Weather permitting, installation begins early January.

City, SPUD Buy Office Embossing Machine

The Shafter city council approved the purchase of an embossing machine for use by city hall. The device will cut metal impressions of addresses for official signage and paperwork.
