Second Car Caravan Leaves for Taft Tomorrow Night

The Shafter Exchange club runs a second car caravan from the Shafter Police station Thursday night led by Max Pearce and Bill Hildebrand to show residents a Taft recreation center in operation. The event aims to promote a youth center, with transportation provided by club members, and invites all residents to attend. Shafter High and Richland Schools Announce Winter Breaks

Shafter High School will start Christmas vacation December 23 and return January 2, while Richland School students return January 6. District officials say Shafter will follow a 179 day calendar and shorten Easter break to three days to finish the school year. The semester ends January 17 with finals soon after, to benefit student attendance.

Lions Donate to High School for Sight Protection

The Shafter Lions Club contributed 75 dollars to Shafter High School for sight conservation as part of a national program. Additional gifts included 100 dollars to Richland schools and 50 dollars to the Kern County Braille Institution. Dean Amelia Cornell said funds will buy glasses for needy students.

Children Help in Making Up Yule Baskets

Children in Shafter will help assemble Christmas baskets for the needy. Richland school students are asked to donate canned goods to their schools by Friday. A civic and service club committee will sort, pack, and provide meat purchases for the baskets to be delivered next week.

Primary School Children Undergoing Dental Checkup

Six hundred fifty primary school children at Richland school received dental hygiene checks sponsored by the school and the Shaffer Junior Women's club. A registered dental hygienist conducted exams with results reported to parents by the school. nurse Mrs. Agnes Theuer said oral health improvements will be urged.

Shafter Stores Offer Extended Hours for Christmas Shopping

Shafter merchants extend hours this weekend with extra clerks and late openings to boost pre holiday sales. Stores stay open until 8 p m Saturday and 9 p m Monday, some Sunday hours, with Christmas Eve closing about 5 30 or 6 p m. Santa plans a central hardware visit Saturday afternoon and the State Theater runs a pre Christmas show for children with tickets at about 30 Shafter establishments.

SHS Football Letters Awarded to Generals Colonels and Bucks

At an all school assembly SHS presented letter awards to football players across the A team B team and C team. Coaches Dan Bledsoe Dale Fahsbender Walter Johnson and Dick Fulcher led the ceremony naming players from Ronald Altman to Buddy Engle on the A squad and listing dozens more helpers across B and C teams with numerous surnames.

J. Cuthere ll, a Shafter rancher, was elected president of the Shafter Exchange Club replacing J W Sandy Sanderson who served two terms. Stanley M. Cook was named vice president with Jack Thompson secretary and Don Wigal treasurer. Board of regents includes M L Sarah Max Pearce Harvey Neuman and Bill Hildebrand.

Mrs. Henry Penner Dies of Heart Attack in Los Angeles

Mrs. Henry Penner, longtime Shafter resident, died Tuesday morning of a heart attack at her Los Angeles home. Survivors include her husband, children and extended family such as the J.E. Klassen family Mr. and Mrs. Joy Witcher, Mrs. Ernest Bartel, Charles Klassen and Frank Russell.

Seven Directors Named To Executive Board By Chamber

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture elected one holdover and six new directors to its executive board. William H. Johnster was the sole holdover. New directors are A. J. Hemingson, Joseph Sales, James G. Tucker, Harvey Gaede, Cass Garratt, and A. C. Burnett. Ballots were sent to 100 recipients including business and agricultural groups. the board will reorganize to elect officers for 1958.

The Shafter chamber of commerce board approved dividing the area into census tracts to simplify the 1980 census. The plan, prepared by a county committee, had previously gained tentative chamber approval.

Generals to Play In Hoop Tourney During Weekend

The Shafter High School Generals will play in an invitational basketball tournament at Bakersfield College this weekend. Wasco High School and Kern County Lions clubs sponsor the event. The Colonels and Bucks will idle until January 4 when all three teams travel to Corcoran. The Generals beat Wasco 49 to 42 last Friday led by Jim Nixon with 16 points. Glen Putman added 12 and Thearthur White 11. Wasco’s Dennis Kline scored 12 as Ho ward Thomas led Wasco with 21. The Bucks beat Wasco Kittens 31 to 16 with Joe Martinez pacing Shafter. In the Taft game the Generals lost 41 to 34 as half score was 23 to 19 Taft. Jim McDaniels had 12 for Taft. The Colonels beat Taft B team 37 to 24. Shafter led 15 before Taft scored with reserves in. The Bucks and Taft tied 27-27 and went to overtime where Taft won 30-29.

Toys for Tots Drive Under Way In Bakersfield

Mrs Kathy Morgan was named chairman of the Shafter Toys for Tots program announced by Capt Wiley Tipton of the Eighth Automatic Weapons battery in Bakersfield. Marines sponsor the drive and pickups can be arranged by calling Pioneer 6 2254. Toys will be collected now through Christmas and delivered to needy children on Christmas Eve.
