De cember 3 gathering at Shafter Motel saw the 20-30 Club announce a $100 check to the Rheumatic Fever Fund from their Turkey Shoot. Darrel Dirksen, local President, noted a successful event despite bad weather and said the annual scholarship will be awarded later in the year.
December 15 18 menu notes a new pizzaburger pie served in Bakersfield East Bakersfield Arvin North South and Shafter high school cafeterias. The dish blends ground meat and sauce with a biscuit crust topped with cheese baked in pie wedges for a la carte and 36 cent lunch options.
The Shafter Merchants Association announces a downtown Christmas celebration beginning December 13 with a children's party and Santa Claus appearances. Stores stay open until 8 pm from December 15 to boost holiday shopping, and children may drop letters to Santa for a chance to win a five dollar gift certificate or a one year subscription to the Shafter Prost Saal.
Students at Shafter High School will present a Christmas program at the PTA meeting in the high school auditorium. The evening features the full orchestra, girls and mixed choruses under Irvin Jensen and Mrs. Milliken, a Christmas play, and carols including Carol of the Drum and God Rest You Merry Gentlemen.
A fire destroyed the South Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church at 30349 Orange shortly after evening services last Sunday. Firefighters from Kern County and Wasco battled the flames, one Wasco firefighter sustaining third degree burns but returning to duty. Officials estimated damage around 25 000 dollars with no definite cause yet. church leaders plan to rebuild and hold temporary services while a new location is sought.
At the Tuesday luncheon in the Shafter Motel banquet room Harley Lindgren civilian Air Corps officer discussed a new radar installation in the valley. It will detect aircraft not picked up by main radar stations, marking the first unit of its kind there. Phil Clarkin served as host for the day.
Advance ticket sales for the twelfth annual Civic Football Banquet indicate a fine turnout. The event will be at Shafter High School cafe teria on Monday December 15 at 7 00 p.m. Speaker is Bob Karpe former all coast tackle at the University of California. About 115 Shafter High School football participants will be honored with awards for effort and scholarship.
The Shafter Adult Recreation Basketball League began its season with seven teams including Central Hardware Deluxe Barber Shop Hitchcock's Auto Parts Nick's Drive In and Brown and Bryant. Central Hardware 58 Hitchcock's 29. Upcoming games December 11 and December 16 feature Deluxe Nick's Hitchcock's Johnson Neuman Central Hardware and Brown Bryant.
The bicycle and pedestrian safety program runs in Richland under Roy Farrell with cooperation from the Shafter Police Department. It educates fourth to eighth grade students through field demonstrations, street crossing practice, and classroom discussions to ensure knowledge of safety rules. Shafter Police officers, including Officer Glen Holt, also inspect bicycles for mechanical safety.
