The Commercial Club at Shafter High completes a pupil led project now in its second year. Members feel the event, timed around Christmas, serves as a meaningful dinner for attendees and supporters.
Laura Ann Boehme daughter of Mr and Mrs Floyd Raney of Shafter was born November 4 1958 and died on Thanksgiving Day at her grandparents home in Katy. Surviving relatives include Mr and Mrs R G Boehme of San Jose.
Kern County Democrats will host a victory party Sunday December 7 at the Hacienda Motel on Highway 99 Bakersfield. The program begins at 6 30 p.m. and includes a buffet a beauty contest an auction and dancing. The beauty contest winner will be crowned Miss Kern Democrat with a reign to 1960. Council will serve as master of ceremonies.
Secretary-Manager Robert C. Diltz announced that December 11 is the last day to transfer voter registrations for the Shafter Wasco Irrigation District election. Eligible electors must be legally qualified by the date and place.
Mrs George Parker Mrs Richard Mundy and Mrs Jack Frey invite the public to view the exhibition of paintings at Buttonwill Library. Coffee is served 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday December 7. Gallery hours extend through the two week period for continuous viewing.
In Shafter the November building permits reached 114750 with Deeter Construction the top applicant supplying six permits totaling 70500 for new homes. Dalke Brothers ranked second with two permits totaling 24400 for homes. Carter and Smith T D Bayless each had one permit for new homes and J C Ellis plus Earl Wipf had remodeling permits.
Fire department offers tips to prevent tree fires including keep tree away from heaters and dry needles, use UL approved lights, inspect cords, do not leave lights on unattended, soak tree in water or sand, avoid flammable decorations, keep children away, remove tree when needles brown, and treat public areas with fire prevention sprays to reduce risk.
The Shafter Woman's Club presents a fashion show featuring designs by Blackwell Dorothy O'Hara Ceil Chapman and Barnard Lohr. Models in mink fur pieces will model December prints and silk gowns on a glittering stage at Veterans Memorial Hall starting 7 30 p m. Tickets are available from club members or Sher El Bakersfield.
A joint meeting of the speaker net and Chamber named Adolph Ki as the first Man of the Year and H. W. Pat Belly as the second honoree by the committee in charge.
In accordance with the association by laws the Kern County Potato Growers Association announces its Annual Business and Dinner Meeting will be held Tuesday evening December 9 1958 at 7 00 p m The venue will be announced later by the organizers.
Shafter High School announces its 1958 59 basketball season with A B and C teams. The opener lists Tulare at Shafter on December 5 followed by Taft at Shafter on December 6. The schedule includes Redwoods at Mt Whitney Delano and Wasco appearances and a COS Tourney at CCS Class A events.
New fiction and non-fiction titles arrive at Shafter Library this week. Notable authors include Norris, Michener, Van Every, Walden, Wharton, Wollheim and Santee with works ranging from adventures and romance to science and history.
Janice Little Miss Spirit of Christmas from Shafter area will ride with other Bakersfield girls in a Marine Corps pageant. She appeared on TV then rode in the parade and will travel to the Fox Theatre to be chosen for the whole area. Janice is a young girl with blonde hair and a four month old baby sibling listed.
Seventh and eighth grade students in the Richland Girls Glee Club directed by Miss Martha Gloeckler will sing a selected group of Christmas carols. Upper Grade students present a Christmas play titled Santa Claus Court portraying Christmas customs in a festive program.
The event named Bob Karpe from the University of California as the evening’s honoree. Members of the A B and C groups were in attendance to hear the announcement.
Shafter public works superintendent J. W. Harris and a four man crew strung garlands and bells from poles across downtown. The Cham ber of Commerce Merchants Division decorated a giant tree at Central and James streets. The garlands, owned by the Chamber, are stored yearly by the street department. This year the lights were not used due to new electric lighting system installation.
A reader recounts an advertisement by C National Bank claiming savings of 30 to 90 dollars on auto purchases and loans at five percent interest. The note emphasizes trading at home for better deals and urges checking with the bank for new car or loan needs during a period of high installment costs.
