Louis Retains Crown In Hotly Contested Fight
Louis defeats Jersey Joe Walcott by a 15 round decision at Madison Square Garden to retain the world heavyweight title. Walcott floors Louis in rounds one and four, trading power shots in a dramatic bout that critics call unpopular with a 16,000 crowd. Louis, aging and slower, survives a fierce challenge but promises a rematch next year.

Weather Aids Crop Harvests In So. Calif
The Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce notes favorable November weather supported harvests of Valencia, walnut, tomato, pepper, alfalfa and lima beans while citrus areas saw light smudging and desert winds. Labor was generally adequate except Riverside cotton fields. lemon growers fear subnormal rain yet expect 34,700 carloads and a lemon price firm market. A light date harvest totals 5,000 tons, down from 12,000 last year, signaling palm fruit shortages ahead.
